Les m\u00e0quines de resson\u00e0ncia magn\u00e8tica, aquells grans imants en forma de tub que es troben comunament als hospitals, utilitzen imants potents per mapar les densitats de les mol\u00e8cules d\u2019aigua i greix dins del cos. A part d\u2019aquestes mol\u00e8cules, tamb\u00e9 es poden mapar altres subst\u00e0ncies com els <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/metabolite\/\">metab\u00f2lits<\/a>, tot i que les seves concentracions sovint s\u00f3n massa baixes per produir imatges clares. Per a superar aquesta limitaci\u00f3, s\u2019utilitza una t\u00e8cnica coneguda com <strong>hiperpolaritzaci\u00f3<\/strong>. Dita t\u00e8cnica millora el senyal de resson\u00e0ncia magn\u00e8tica d\u2019aquestes subst\u00e0ncies, fent-les m\u00e9s visibles durant els esc\u00e0ners de resson\u00e0ncia magn\u00e8tica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La hiperpolaritzaci\u00f3 implica preparar fora del cos una subst\u00e0ncia en un estat on la seva magnetitzaci\u00f3\u2014clau per crear imatges de RM\u2014\u00e9s gaireb\u00e9 m\u00e0xima. Aquest proc\u00e9s pot augmentar el senyal milers de vegades en comparaci\u00f3 amb el seu estat natural. Un cop hiperpolaritzada, la subst\u00e0ncia s\u2019injecta al pacient i es transporta a l\u2019\u00f2rgan o teixit objectiu. Tanmateix, abans que aix\u00f2 ocorri, \u00e9s crucial confirmar que la subst\u00e0ncia est\u00e0 adequadament hiperpolaritzada a trav\u00e9s de rigorosos processos de control de qualitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les t\u00e8cniques de control de qualitat actuals enfronten dos grans desafiaments. Primer, aquests m\u00e8todes sovint redueixen la magnetitzaci\u00f3 de la mostra durant el proc\u00e9s de lectura, la qual cosa disminueix la seva capacitat per millorar les imatges de la resson\u00e0ncia magn\u00e8tica. Segon, el temps requerit per a la mesura pot ser llarg. Durant aquest per\u00edode la magnetitzaci\u00f3 de la subst\u00e0ncia decau de manera natural, limitant la possibilitat de realitzar mesures consecutives. Aix\u00f2 resulta en una manca de dades cr\u00edtiques que podrien ajudar a maximitzar l\u2019efici\u00e8ncia de la hiperpolaritzaci\u00f3. A m\u00e9s, un cop la mostra est\u00e0 hiperpolaritzada, hi ha el risc que perdi la seva magnetitzaci\u00f3 durant el transport cap a la m\u00e0quina de RM. Les t\u00e8cniques de control de qualitat tradicionals, a causa de la seva naturalesa lenta, poden no ser capaces de detectar aquestes p\u00e8rdues al llarg del trajecte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ara, una col\u00b7laboraci\u00f3 d&#8217;investigadors de l&#8217;IBEC, el Dr. James Eills (actualment al Forschungszentrum J\u00fclich, Alemanya) i la Dra. Irene Marco Rius, i de l&#8217;ICFO, el <strong>professor ICREA Morgan W. Mitchell<\/strong> i el <strong>Dr. Michael C. D. Tayler<\/strong>, ha demostrat com les t\u00e8cniques de sensors at\u00f2mics superen les limitacions del mostreig convencional a l\u2019hora de mesurar la magnetitzaci\u00f3 de materials hiperpolaritzats. Aquest aven\u00e7 ha estat recentment informat a la revista <em>PNAS<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En particular, l\u2019equip va utilitzar magnet\u00f2metres at\u00f2mics bombejats \u00f2pticament (OPM, per les seves sigles en angl\u00e8s), els principis operatius dels quals difereixen fonamentalment dels sensors tradicionals, <strong>possibilitant la detecci\u00f3 en temps real dels camps produ\u00efts per les mol\u00e8cules hiperpolaritzades<\/strong>. La naturalesa dels OPM va permetre a aquests investigadors realitzar observacions <strong>cont\u00ednues<\/strong>, <strong>d\u2019alta resoluci\u00f3<\/strong> i <strong>no destructives<\/strong> durant tot l\u2019experiment, incloent-hi el proc\u00e9s mateix d\u2019hiperpolaritzaci\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Segons els autors, si el camp de detecci\u00f3 de la hiperpolaritzaci\u00f3 fos el cinema, els m\u00e8todes anteriors serien com una seq\u00fc\u00e8ncia de fotografies fixes, deixant a mans de l&#8217;espectador endevinar el fil conductor entre les imatges congelades. &#8220;En canvi, la nostra t\u00e8cnica \u00e9s m\u00e9s com un v\u00eddeo, on veus tota la hist\u00f2ria fotograma a fotograma. La resoluci\u00f3 sense precedents i el seguiment en temps real dels sensors at\u00f2mics els van permetre observar com la polaritzaci\u00f3 en un compost metab\u00f2lit ([1-13C]-fumarat) evolucionava sota la pres\u00e8ncia d\u2019un camp magn\u00e8tic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Els sensors at\u00f2mics van revelar \u2018din\u00e0miques d\u2019esp\u00edn ocultes\u2019 que havien passat desapercebudes fins ara, oferint un nou cam\u00ed per optimitzar la hiperpolaritzaci\u00f3 des del principi del proc\u00e9s. \u201cEls m\u00e8todes anteriors enfosquien les oscil\u00b7lacions subtils en el perfil de magnetitzaci\u00f3, que abans no es detectaven\u201d, assenyala Tayler. &#8220;Sense l&#8217;OPM, haur\u00edem aconseguit una polaritzaci\u00f3 final sub\u00f2ptima sense ni tan sols adonar-nos-en&#8221;. M\u00e9s enll\u00e0 de la simple observaci\u00f3, aquest m\u00e8tode podria utilitzar-se per controlar el proc\u00e9s de polaritzaci\u00f3 en temps real i aturar-lo en el punt m\u00e9s convenient, per exemple, quan s&#8217;assoleix la polaritzaci\u00f3 m\u00e0xima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Aquest \u00e9s un bonic exemple de la nova ci\u00e8ncia que es pot aconseguir quan investigadors de diferents disciplines treballen junts. La proximitat de l\u2019IBEC i l\u2019ICFO va permetre que pogu\u00e9ssim col\u00b7laborar de prop i assolir resultats realment innovadors.<\/p>\n<cite>James Eills<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>L&#8217;estudi va revelar un altre comportament inesperat quan l\u2019equip va aplicar un camp magn\u00e8tic per magnetitzar i desmagnetitzar repetidament la mol\u00e8cula de fumarat hiperpolaritzada. El que s\u2019esperava era que la magnetitzaci\u00f3 augment\u00e9s fins a un m\u00e0xim i despr\u00e9s torn\u00e9s a zero successivament, passant d\u2019un estat a l\u2019altre de manera suau cada vegada. Per\u00f2, en contra d\u2019aquestes simples expectatives, la mol\u00e8cula va mostrar din\u00e0miques complexes degut a resson\u00e0ncies ocultes que apareixien sota certes durades de magnetitzaci\u00f3-desmagnetitzaci\u00f3 i camps magn\u00e8tics. \u201cAquest coneixement ens ajudar\u00e0 a detectar quan es produeixen comportaments no desitjats i ajustar els par\u00e0metres (com la durada del cicle o la intensitat del camp magn\u00e8tic) per evitar-ho\u201d, explica Tayler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El treball representa un aven\u00e7 en la tecnologia de resson\u00e0ncia magn\u00e8tica hiperpolaritzada, gr\u00e0cies en gran part als esfor\u00e7os col\u00b7laboratius del <a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/molecular-imaging-for-precision-medicine\/\">grup d&#8217;Imatge Molecular per a la Medicina de Precisi\u00f3 de l\u2019IBEC<\/a> i el <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icfo.eu\/research-group\/8\/q-light-atoms\/home\/437\/\">grup d\u2019\u00d2ptica Qu\u00e0ntica At\u00f2mica de l&#8217;ICFO<\/a>. L\u2019experi\u00e8ncia de l\u2019IBEC en m\u00e8todes d\u2019hiperpolaritzaci\u00f3 i de l&#8217;ICFO en tecnologies de detecci\u00f3 OPM van ser fonamentals per aconseguir aquests resultats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAquest \u00e9s un bonic exemple de la nova ci\u00e8ncia que es pot aconseguir quan investigadors de diferents disciplines treballen junts. La proximitat de l\u2019IBEC i l\u2019ICFO va permetre que pogu\u00e9ssim col\u00b7laborar de prop i assolir resultats realment innovadors&#8221;, reconeix el Dr. James Eills, investigador de l&#8217;IBEC i primer autor de l\u2019article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El Dr. Tayler reflexiona sobre l\u2019\u00e8xit de l\u2019equip: &#8220;Les mesures de l&#8217;OPM van funcionar meravellosament des del principi. <strong>La sensibilitat exquisida dels sensors va revelar din\u00e0miques ocultes que no hav\u00edem anticipat, com si estiguessin fets per a aquesta tasca. La facilitat d&#8217;\u00fas i l\u2019abund\u00e0ncia d\u2019informaci\u00f3 nova els converteixen en una eina poderosa per monitoritzar la hiperpolaritzaci\u00f3<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><br><br>Beneficis per a la RM i altres aplicacions futures<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019aplicaci\u00f3 immediata d\u2019aquest estudi seria integrar sensors at\u00f2mics port\u00e0tils en el control de qualitat de mostres cl\u00edniques per a resson\u00e0ncies magn\u00e8tiques, cosa que l\u2019equip de l&#8217;ICFO ja est\u00e0 implementant en el Projecte del Ministeri Espanyol \u201cSEE-13-MRI\u201d. D\u2019aquesta manera, <strong>es podrien guiar les mol\u00e8cules al nivell m\u00e9s alt possible de polaritzaci\u00f3 durant la hiperpolaritzaci\u00f3 i certificar de manera fiable el nivell de polaritzaci\u00f3 abans que les subst\u00e0ncies s&#8217;injectin als pacients<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>El m\u00e8tode que hem desenvolupat obre nous camins no nom\u00e9s per millorar la resson\u00e0ncia magn\u00e8tica, sin\u00f3 per a diversos camps que depenen d\u2019una detecci\u00f3 magn\u00e8tica precisa. Estem emocionats per veure el seu desenvolupament futur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Tayler<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>El desenvolupament podria reduir significativament els costos i els reptes log\u00edstics de la RM metab\u00f2lica. De ser aix\u00ed, aix\u00f2 ampliaria el seu abast des del petit nombre de centres de recerca especialitzats on s\u2019utilitza actualment, fins a un gran nombre hospitals arreu del m\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tanmateix, el potencial dels sensors at\u00f2mics va molt m\u00e9s enll\u00e0 de la imatge m\u00e8dica. El mateix sistema de seguiment en temps real, no destructiu, utilitzant magnet\u00f2metres bombejats \u00f2pticament (OPMs), podria aplicar-se per monitoritzar macromol\u00e8cules en processos qu\u00edmics, estudiar elements de f\u00edsica d\u2019alta energia o fins i tot optimitzar algorismes basats en espins en computaci\u00f3 qu\u00e0ntica.
