SUMMARY:Innovació científica i tecnològica en salut: transferència de resultats per a la medicina del futur
DESCRIPTION:i millorar la qualitat de vida de la ciutadana\, però sense transferència no hi ha impacte. Catalunya és un referent en recerca biomèdica i biotecnològica\, però el gran repte és transformar aquest coneixement en solucions reals que arribin a la clínica i al pacient. \nEn el marc de la Barcelona Health Innovation Week 2026\, des de l’Institut de Bioenginyeria de Catalunya (IBEC) organitzem aquesta jornada per demostrar que és possible connectar l’ecosistema de recerca amb el sistema de sanitari i empreses per impulsar la medicina personalitzada\, les teràpies avançades i les tecnologies que milloren el diagnòstic i el tractament. \nAquesta sessió posa el focus en la transferència tecnològica i en l’impacte real de la recerca. Presentarem els resultats del Pla Complementari de Biotecnologia aplicada a la salut a Catalunya\, un programa que ha fomentat la col·laboració entre centres de recerca i instituts sanitaris per desenvolupar solucions disruptives en salut. SUMMARY:Barcelona Blood-Brain Barrier Conference 2025
DESCRIPTION:The blood-brain barrier (BBB) separates the blood circulation from the brain tissue. However\, despite its name\, the BBB is far from a static\, impenetrable barrier. Instead\, this highly dynamic structure responds to and regulates the complex requirements of brain function. To advance our knowledge of how the BBB impacts health and disease\, the 2nd edition of the Barcelona Blood-Brain Barrier Conference will bring together scientists from across the globe to discuss emerging topics in BBB physiology\, pathology and translational research. This interdisciplinary event will incorporate neuroscience\, vascular biology\, protein engineering\, bioengineering\, and nanomedicine to provide a unique platform to foster collaboration and address challenges shaping the future of this field. \nIn the name of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Institut Químic de Sarrià (IQS)\, we look forward to welcoming you to the vibrant and historic city of Barcelona to take part in these lively discussions\, make lasting connections\, and push the boundaries of the field forward.

SUMMARY:International Satellite Event. Sustainable Research: Fit For The Future
DESCRIPTION:IBEC\, in collaboration with SuRe-CAT (Sustainable Research Catalonia network)\, Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB) and Nanomed Spain\, is hosting an in-person satellite event of “Sustainable Research: Fit for the Future”\, an event organized at EMBL Heidelberg together with EMBO\, the Sustainable European Laboratories Network (SELs)\, and with support from the European Union’s Climate Pact.  \nThis event provides an opportunity to engage in critical discussions on sustainability in scientific research\, bringing together professionals from various research institutions across Catalonia.  \nThe symposium will explore the vital role of sustainable practices within the scientific community. As researchers tackle global challenges\, adopting environmentally responsible and socially equitable research methodologies is more important than ever. Topics covered will include green laboratory practices\, the power of grassroots movements\, organizational sustainability strategies\, and the role of funders\, all with a focus on the future of sustainable science.  \nThrough keynote presentations and panel discussions\, participants will connect with leading experts\, exchange experiences\, and collaborate across disciplines. By fostering a culture of sustainability in science\, we can reduce our ecological footprint\, enhance research integrity\, and ensure the long-term viability of scientific progress.  \n  \nWhy join the Satellite Event?  \nThis satellite event will serve as a hub for networking and collaboration within the local research community. It will be a dynamic platform where attendees are encouraged to share best practices in sustainable labs\, addressing common challenges\, and collaboratively exploring innovative solutions by submitting a candidature to participate in the “Sustainable research experience sharing” session (see abstract submission link). Through interactive round tables\, expert-led discussions\, and case studies from leading institutions\, participants will gain practical insights and actionable strategies for integrating sustainability into their work. The event will also provide opportunities to connect with peers\, exchange ideas\, and collectively address sustainability challenges in research environments.   \nAttending a satellite event instead of travelling to the main symposium at EMBL Heidelberg allows for active engagement in meaningful discussions while reducing carbon footprints. DESCRIPTION:Natural Strategies for Solar Light Harvesting\nProfessor of Biophysics\, Photosynthesis and Energy at Department of Physics of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. \nIn this presentation I will introduce the fundamental processes of light harvesting in photosynthetic organisms and discuss their remarkable abilities to adapt and acclimate to diverse light conditions. Photosynthetic organisms have evolved sophisticated strategies to capture and utilize solar energy efficiently\, allowing them to thrive in various environments. This presentation will delve into the mechanisms by which these organisms optimize their light-harvesting capabilities\, including pigment choice\, photoprotection\, and dynamic responses to changes in light quality and quantity.\nThe presentation will discuss key aspects of light harvesting\, such as the spectral tuning of pigments to match available light wavelengths and the regulation of energy flow to prevent damage caused by excess light. Additionally\, the remarkable acclimation abilities of photosynthetic organisms to gradual changes in light intensity will be explored\, highlighting their capacity to fine-tune their photosynthetic machinery for optimal performance under varying light conditions.\nBy examining the natural strategies employed by photosynthetic organisms\, this presentation aims to provide insights into the principles of solar light harvesting. Understanding these natural strategies offers valuable lessons for optimizing light-harvesting systems and harnessing solar energy in a sustainable and efficient manner. \n\nRoberta Croce studied chemistry at the University of Padova and completed her Ph.D. in Plant Biology/Biophysics at the University of Milano in 1998. After two postdoc periods in Germany (MPI Mulheim a.d. Rurh) and Italy (University of Verona)\, she got a permanent position at the Institute of Biophysics of the CNR. In 2006 she moved to the University of Groningen where she became associate professor in 2008. Since 2011 she is Professor of Biophysics\, Photosynthesis and Energy at Department of Physics of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of photosynthesis\, using an integrated approach including molecular biology\, biochemistry and ultrafast spectroscopy. She published more than 180 scientific articles on the topic of photosynthesis. She is an elected member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Royal Holland Society of Science and Humanity (KHMW). She is also a member of the Board of Reviewing Editors of Science and the Plant Cell\, and the recipient of several personal research grants. In 2022 she was elected president of the International Society of Photosynthesis.

Durante el evento se presentarán las principales líneas de trabajo del Plan\, que abarcan temas que van desde el uso y gestión de bases de datos en medicina de precisión hasta el desarrollo de nanofármacos\, así como técnicas y procesos para terapias avanzadas y dirigidas.   \nEl objetivo de la jornada es fortalecer y estimular colaboraciones entre los diferentes actores del ecosistema de investigación traslacional en salud.  \nLa jornada también servirá para crear sinergias con los diferentes programas y plataformas financiadas por el ISCIIII.

SUMMARY:Barcelona Integrative Resonance Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Barcelona Integrative Resonance\nThe symposium aims to celebrate the strong magnetic resonance momentum in Barcelona and bring together the community working with this highly versatile technique in a plethora of different applications. Also\, it will represent the kick-off meeting upon the installation in Barcelona of three new magnetic resonance instruments: a GHz NMR\, a pulsed EPR-ENDOR\, and a MRI linked to hyperpolarization. \nThe NMR and EPR instruments will be part of the Scientific and Technological Centers of the University of Barcelona (CCiTUB). The Hyperpolarization-MRI instrument is part of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and is located next to the NMR instruments in the Barcelona Science Park. The 1 GHz NMR instrument is part of a Spanish Singular Scientific and Technological Infrastructure with nodes in Barcelona\, Bilbao and Madrid. \nThe new infrastructures witness the vitality of the magnetic resonance community. We want to emphasize by this joint celebration the importance of strengthening the connection between the diverse flavors of magnetic resonance\, as well as the different scientific fields and institutions. The list of speakers includes a nearly 50%-50% balance between consolidated scientific leaders and early career scientists that represent the bright future of magnetic resonance in Catalonia\, Spain and Europe.
