SUMMARY:BIST Open Seminar: Roberta Croce
DESCRIPTION:Natural Strategies for Solar Light Harvesting\nProfessor of Biophysics\, Photosynthesis and Energy at Department of Physics of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. \nIn this presentation I will introduce the fundamental processes of light harvesting in photosynthetic organisms and discuss their remarkable abilities to adapt and acclimate to diverse light conditions. Photosynthetic organisms have evolved sophisticated strategies to capture and utilize solar energy efficiently\, allowing them to thrive in various environments. This presentation will delve into the mechanisms by which these organisms optimize their light-harvesting capabilities\, including pigment choice\, photoprotection\, and dynamic responses to changes in light quality and quantity.\nThe presentation will discuss key aspects of light harvesting\, such as the spectral tuning of pigments to match available light wavelengths and the regulation of energy flow to prevent damage caused by excess light. Additionally\, the remarkable acclimation abilities of photosynthetic organisms to gradual changes in light intensity will be explored\, highlighting their capacity to fine-tune their photosynthetic machinery for optimal performance under varying light conditions.\nBy examining the natural strategies employed by photosynthetic organisms\, this presentation aims to provide insights into the principles of solar light harvesting. Understanding these natural strategies offers valuable lessons for optimizing light-harvesting systems and harnessing solar energy in a sustainable and efficient manner. \n\nRoberta Croce studied chemistry at the University of Padova and completed her Ph.D. in Plant Biology/Biophysics at the University of Milano in 1998. SUMMARY:Phys2BioMed Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Phys2BioMed Symposium\nPresent and future of mechanics of cells and tissues in health and disease\nThe mechanical properties of biological samples may provide insights into many physiological and pathological processes. Examples are the mechanical properties of cancer cells or changes of mechanical properties during cell invasion. Defining standardized procedures for nanomechanical measurements and providing\, in the longer-term\, a data bank of mechanical fingerprints of diseases\, can lead to the development of effective early-diagnostic tools. \nPhys2BioMed is an ITN (Innovative Training Network) that has the purpose of providing scientific and technological outcomes on biomechanics and mechanical determinants of diseases. The key advantage is merging diverse competences at the European level\, from different fields like nanoscience and nanotechnology\, physics\, biology\, and medicine. Thanks to the participation of hospitals and companies\, ESRs (Early Stage Researchers) are exposed also to the non-academic sector. \nThe scientific community is invited to participate in person or online in this symposium. \nCheck for the programme and register here.

SUMMARY:InsideScientific: Javier Burgués
DESCRIPTION:Decoding Turbulent Chemical Plumes with Improved Signal Processing and Machine Learning\nJavier Burgués\, Signal and information processing for sensing systems group \nMillions of years of evolution has aided animals and insects to develop the highly sensitive ability to track and navigate odor plumes over great distances.  This behavior is integral to their survival and propagation of the species; decades of research has gone into finding a way to replicate this inate behaviour in autonomous mobile robots.  And while it is accepted that animals are able to find hidden information from complex signals for odor navigation purposes\, the sub-Hz bandwidth of chemical sensors largely limits the efficacy of information retrieval.  Naturally\, this hinders the application of mobile robots for chemical source localization tasks. \nDuring this webinar sponsored by Aurora Scientific\, Dr. Burgués will discuss how he and his team are leveraging various signal processing and machine learning techniques in order to decode the fine-scale structure of turbulent chemical plumes using low-cost chemical sensors.  Specifically\, he will discuss three signal processing methods they developed to improve MOX sensor dynamics\, and share the experimental setups they used to test their theories. Finally\, he will share data from recent experiments and elaborate on the conclusions of their studies and how robotic plume tracking technology might apply to industrial and air quality monitoring\, research and more. \n\nYou can watch the seminar here

SUMMARY:Una nueva ruta de acceso al cerebro
DESCRIPTION:Conferencia a cargo de la Dra.

SUMMARY:II International Symposium on Photopharmacology (ISPP2018)
DESCRIPTION:II International Symposium on Photopharmacology (ISPP2018) – Innovative therapeutics using light\nThe world’s leading researchers and experts in the field will meet at the second international photopharmacology symposium in Vic on 1 and 2 November. \nThe convention is being organised jointly by the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC)\, the Bioengineering Institute of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia – Spanish National Research Council (IQAC-CSIC). More than 120 people\, the vast majority of whom come from countries other than Spain\, will be attending the event\, which will take place in the Torre dels Frares building at the UVic. \nThe symposium will include around twenty lectures\, three blocks of short presentations and two poster sessions. The speakers include Ben Feringa\, of the University of Groningen (Netherlands)\, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2016 for the design and synthesis of molecular machines – an award he shared with Jean-Pierre Sauvage and Fraser Stoddart. Among others\, the scheduled lectures include those by Edith C. Glazer of the University of Kentucky\, who is working on the development of complex metals such as possible photoactive drugs\, and by Austria’s Dirk Trauner of the University of New York\, focusing on the application of photopharmacology in neurobiology. One of the main achievements of his team\, working with Richard Kramer and Ehud Isacoff\, has been to restore sight in blind animals\, using drugs that respond to visible light as molecular prostheses. \nInformation: http://events.ibecbarcelona.eu/ispp2018/ \n  \nWhat is photopharmacology? \nPhotopharmacology is based on administering photosensitive compounds as drugs\, which are only activated and take effect in combination with light. This specific characteristic provides a high level of control over the administration of medications and therapies\, since it means that the specific point of the body where it is applied and the duration of the application can be decided. This precision and location means that as a technique\, photopharmacological treatments are not invasive\, and can achieve optimum results with minimal secondary effects. \nAlthough its history dates back to the 1960s\, photopharmacology has primarily developed over the last ten years. During this period\, a significant critical mass of researchers has been created in research centres and universities around the world that focus on the field from various perspectives. It is a multifaceted science\, which includes biology\, pharmacology\, physics\, chemistry\, engineering and medicine. Its applications are also extremely wide-ranging: it may be therapeutically useful in a wide variety of medical fields\, within which neurosciences and cardiology are particularly important. Some applications that are being studied could also provide substantial improvements in pathologies such as diabetes and chronic pain. Photopharmacology can also be used as a research tool\, and can be combined with other technologies\, such as materials nanotechnology. \n

SUMMARY:IN2UB International Research Seminars: Pere Roca-Cusachs
DESCRIPTION:IBEC group leader Pere Roca-Cusachs is the speaker at the inaugural seminar of the new IN2UB International Research Seminar series. \nSensing the matrix: transducing mechanical signals from integrins to the nucleus\nPere Roca-Cusachs\, IBEC\nCell proliferation and differentiation\, as well as key processes in development\, tumorigenesis\, and wound healing\,are strongly determined by the properties of the extra cellular matrix (ECM)\, including its mechanical rigidity and the density and distribution of its ligands. In this talk\, I will explain how we combine molecular biology\, biophysical measurements\, and theoretical modelling to understand the mechanisms by which cells sense and respond to matrix properties. I will discuss how the properties under force of integrin-ECM bonds\, and of the adaptor protein talin\, drive and regulate matrix sensing. I will further discuss how this sensing can be understood through a computational molecular clutch model\, which can quantitatively predict the role of integrins\, talin\, myosin\, and ECM receptors\, and their effect on cell response. Finally\, I will analyze how signals triggered by rigidity at cell-ECM adhesions are transmitted to the nucleus\, leading to the activation of the transcriptional regulator YAP. \n

SUMMARY:Living Machines 2018
DESCRIPTION:The development of future real-world technologies will depend strongly on our understanding and harnessing of the principles underlying living systems and the flow of communication signals between living and artificial systems. \nBiomimetics is the development of novel technologies through the distillation of principles from the study of biological systems. The investigation of biomimetic systems can serve two complementary goals. First\, a suitably designed and configured biomimetic artefact can be used to test theories about the natural system of interest. Second\, biomimetic technologies can provide useful\, elegant and efficient solutions to unsolved challenges in science and engineering. \nBiohybrid systems are formed by combining at least one biological component—an existing living system—and at least one artificial\, newly-engineered component. By passing information in one or both directions\, such a system forms a new hybrid bio-artificial entity. The theme of the conference also encompasses biomimetic methods for manufacture\, repair and recycling inspired by natural processes such as reproduction\, digestion\, morphogenesis and metamorphosis. \nThe following are some examples of “Living Machines” as featured at past conferences: \n\nBiomimetic robots and their component technologies (sensors\, actuators\, processors) that can intelligently interact with their environments.\nActive biomimetic materials and structures that self-organize and self-repair.\nNature-inspired designs and manufacturing processes.\nBiomimetic computers—neuromimetic emulations of the physiological basis for intelligent behaviour.\nBiohybrid brain-machine interfaces and neural implants.\nArtificial organs and body-parts including sensory organ-chip hybrids and intelligent prostheses.\nOrganism-level biohybrids such as robot-animal or robot-human systems.\n\nhttp://www.livingmachinesconference.eu/2018/
