SUMMARY:IBEC-IRB joint seminar
DESCRIPTION:Aberrant phase separation is a widespread killing mechanism of bioactive peptides in health and diseas\n\n\n\nSteven Boeynaems\, Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine and Investigator at the Texas Children’s Hospital \n\n\n\nCationic repeat peptides are increasingly implicated in the pathophysiology of age-related neurodegenerative disease. These peptides are highly toxic in all tested disease models\, and seem to perturb an ever-expanding list of cellular pathways. This observation begs the question whether this target promiscuity is (1) relevant to disease and (2) how it is encoded in such simple sequences. A first clue came from the observation that these cationic repeat peptides have the tendency to drive protein condensation. Given their charge\, these peptides are exquisitely sensitive to the presence of nucleic acids. By studying their target space as a function of RNA concentration using mass spec\, we uncover a hidden hierarchy in their target preference that relates to subcellular differences in RNA abundance.  \n\n\n\nTo test whether these insights from disease translate to biology\, we used this framework to develop a machine learning algorithm that allowed us to predict protein behavior form sequence. Compellingly\, we uncover that bioactive peptides such as antimicrobial peptides produced by our own cells\, but also venom peptides derived from spiders\, scorpions and rattle snakes\, phenocopy the molecular behavior of these disease-related cationic peptides. In all\, we find that such peptides exert toxicity by upsetting the electrostatic balance of a cell\, hitting myriad pathways at once. We name this process polycation poisoning and find that it has independently evolved again and again across the entire tree of life as a killing strategy of bioactive peptides. Based on these findings we are now exploring toxin-antitoxin systems as innovative therapeutic strategies to protect neurons against cationic repeat peptide toxicity. \n\n\n\nHosts: Benedetta Bolognesi and Xavier Salvatella \n\n\n\nPlace: Felix Serratosa Hall\, PCB

SUMMARY:Open BIST Seminar: Dr. Wiktor Szymanski
DESCRIPTION:Molecular basis for the use of light in medicine\n\n\n\nWiktor Szymanski\, Medical Imaging Center\, University Medical Center Groningen \n\n\n\nLight is a unique control element in chemistry and biology\, because it can be safely delivered with very high precision to modulate processes in space and time. In this educational lecture\, aimed at Master students but hopefully of interest to all academics\, I will discuss the main processes that a molecule can undergo once it has been promoted to the excited state under light irradiation. Using the Jablonski diagram as the starting point\, I will outline how these processes are or could be used in the clinic for diagnostics (optical and optoacoustic imaging) and therapy (photodynamic therapy and photopharmacology). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWiktor Szymanski received his PhD degree from The Warsaw University of Technology\, Poland\, in 2008\, working under the supervision of Prof. Ryszard Ostaszewski. He spent two years working on the use of biotransformations in organic chemistry with Prof. Ben L. Feringa and Prof. Dick B. Janssen at the University of Groningen. Since 2010 he has been working on the construction of photoactive protein- peptide- and DNA-bioconjugates and photopharmacology in the Feringa Labs. In 2014\, he joined the Medical Imaging Center\, University Medical Center Groningen\, where he was appointed in 2015 as tenure track assistant professor and in 2019 as associate professor (adjunct hoogleraar).

SUMMARY:4th IBEC-ICMS Joint Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The event is in the framework of an alliance between the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS)\, a research institute of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).\n \nThe event aims to identify synergies and potential for collaboration between IBEC groups and the researchers of ICMS. It is the 4th edition of a series of joint symposiums that started in Eindhoven on September 2018.  During that symposium many natural connections initiated for the benefit of both our organizations. We therefore feel that there are excellent opportunities to further strengthen the ties between our institutes. Therefore\, we are organizing a number of scientific exchanges and working on the identification of common research interests. \nThis fourth ICMS-IBEC Symposium will be a great opportunity to foster collaborations\, strengthen the existing ones\, and an opportunity for young researchers involved in the exchange program to present their activities in the partner organization. \nThe event will be held online using the Teams app. You can register here

SUMMARY:M-CELS Workshop Barcelona Satellite
DESCRIPTION:EMBL and IBEC aim to contribute to the discussion on challenges and opportunities in the expanding field of Multi-cellular engineered living systems (M-CELS). \nWe have organized a satellite session to the M-CELS Workshop 2021 organized by the Center for Emergent Behaviors of Integrated Cellular Systems. The session aims also to be an appetizer to the 2nd EMBL-IBEC Winter Conference on Engineering Multicellular Systems to be held on 9-11th February 2022 in Barcelona. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMulti-cellular engineered living systems are purpose-driven living systems with multiple interacting living components. They are engineered for specific goals or functions but take emergence into account during the design process\, allowing the final system to emerge through natural and non-natural biological processes. M-CELS research is intended to provide a fundamental engineering understanding that enables a quantitative approach bridging between single cells and organs or organisms. The field is still developing\, so M-CELS as a field of research is still rapidly expanding \nRegistration here

SUMMARY:SEMINAR Series in Development\, Regeneration and Disease
DESCRIPTION:“Engineering human pluripotent stem cells for organoid applications in regenerative medicine”\nNuria Montserrat\nCatalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA)\, Barcelona\, Spain.\nPluripotency for Organ Regeneration\, Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC)\, The Barcelona Institute of Technology (BIST)\, Barcelona\, Spain.\nCentro de Investigación Biomédica en Red en Bioingeniería\, Biomateriales y Nanomedicina\, Madrid\, Spain.\nABSTRACT \nThe generation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) derived organoids is one of the biggest scientific advances in regenerative medicine. Recently\, we have demonstrated that lengthening the time that hPSCs are exposed to a threedimensional microenvironment in the presence of defined renal inductive signals we are able to generate kidney organoids that transcriptomically match secondtrimester human fetal kidneys. Furthermore\, we have recently developed a transplantation method that utilizes the chick chorioallantoic membrane to emulate a soft in vivo microenvironment further sustaining the growth and differentiation of implanted kidney organoids\, as well as providing a vascular component. \nIn order to promote the efficient generation of nephron-like structures we have also mimicked the stiffness of the in ovo chorioallantoic membrane microenvironment in vitro by fabricating compliant hydrogels. This approach showed that by mirroring both biochemical and mechanical cues during organoid generation we are able to boost renal commitment and nephron differentiation. We will also discuss recent findings on the application of different bioengineering strategies (i.e.\, including 3D biopriting and tissue engineering) for kidney organoid generation\, as well as the definition of culture conditions mimicking renal disease. Furthermore\, we will discuss how through the use of CRISPR/Cas9 we are able to introduce mutations related to kidney developmental diseases exploiting kidney organoid technology.

SUMMARY:2nd IBEC-ICMS Joint Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The event is in the framework of an alliance between the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS)\, a research institute of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).\n \nAs part of IBEC Strategic Plan 2018-2020\, It’s planned that the similarities and complementary aspects of both IBEC and ICMS – their multidisciplinarity\, active missions to connect with industry and clinicians\, and strong research in nano\, materials\, molecular devices\, supramolecular systems and regenerative medicine – may form the basis of an institutional-level alliance to share people\, resources and knowledge. \nThe event aims to identify synergies and potential for collaboration between IBEC groups and the researchers of ICMS. It is the 2nd edition of a series of joint symposiums that started in Eindhoven on September 2018.  During that symposium many natural connections initiated for the benefit of both our organizations. We therefore feel that there are excellent opportunities to further strengthen the ties between our institutes. Therefore\, we are organizing a number of scientific exchanges and working on the identification of common research interests. \nThis second ICMS-IBEC Symposium will be a great opportunity to foster collaborations\, strengthen the existing ones\, and an opportunity for young researchers involved in the exchange program to present their activities in the partner organization. \nIf you would like to attend\, please go to the symposium website and register (see link below). It is important to register so we can organize the room\, poster stands and catering accordingly. It takes only 20 seconds. You can also register even if you do not bring a poster along. \nDeadline for registration: 8th July 17h. \nWEBSITE: https://events.ibecbarcelona.eu/ibec-icms/ \n
