DESCRIPTION:EIT Health Innovation Day\nin Barcelona on November 24th\, 2018\, at the historical building of the Universitat de Barcelona with the participation of IBEC. Innovation Days will take place in 19 different locations this year and for the first time Barcelona is among them. \nThe purpose of this initiative is to encourage and promote Innovation and Entrepreneurship\, applied in this occasion to the Health sector\, among students. During the day\, you will be able to tackle real life challenges in healthy leaving and active ageing. You will also share the experience with participants from a variety of disciplines\, origins and backgrounds and you will be provided the necessary tools and coaching to develop a new solution for the industry. \ni-Day Barcelona will invite inspirational speakers and experts within the field of health innovation. You will be able to form multidisciplinary teams to develop real and viable innovations\, compete for i-Day prizes and learn practical skills in innovation! Three prizes will be awarded (1st prize 500€\, 2nd prize 300€ and 3rd prize 200€). DESCRIPTION:Physics of epithelial flows and folds\nGuillaume Salbreux\, Theoretical Physics of Biology Laboratory\, The Francis Crick Institute\, London\nThe shape of a biological tissue is determined by mechanical stresses acting within the tissue cells. During embryonic morphogenesis\, forces generated in the actomyosin cytoskeleton in the cell of epithelia result in cell deformation\, cell rearrangements\, and 3D bending of the epithelium. To understand tissue morphogenesis\, force generation at the cellular scale must be related to flows and deformation occurring at the tissue scale. Here I will discuss how this relation can be captured by a 3D vertex model or by a continuum theory of active surfaces to understand epithelial fold formation during embryonic development. Using this framework\, one finds that two different mechanisms\, basal relaxation and lateral constriction\, can account for fold formation in the Drosophila wing disc. I will also discuss how planar tissue flows are related to cell shape changes and cell division\, and show how the growth of the Drosophila histoblast nests can be decomposed into basic cellular events.

DESCRIPTION:Imaging therapy response and failure\nErik Sahai\, The Francis Crick Institute\, London\nMany tumors show an initial response to targeted therapies before genetic resistance emerges\, however little is known about how tumor cells tolerate therapy before genetic resistance dominates. We present data that shows how the ECM generates a ‘safe haven’ in which melanoma cells can tolerate targeted therapy.  This supports the population of cancer cells from which genetically resistance emerges. We are now studying the emergence of resistant clones and clonal competition in the context of ‘safe havens’. Finally\, we present analysis of organ specific responses to targeted therapy in melanoma.

SUMMARY:Bioengineering Workshop - ASBTEC & IBEC
DESCRIPTION:Després de l’èxit del Workshop de Biologia Sintètica que vam organitzar des de l’ASBTEC ara fa un any\, tenim l’honor de presentar-vos un nou Workshop sobre Bioenginyeria\, organitzat conjuntament amb l’Institut de Bioenginyeria de Catalunya (IBEC). Aquest camp de les biociències s’ha posat tant de moda per la incorporació sistemàtica de noves tecnologies (especialment les d’escales microscòpiques) a la biologia clàssica per tal de tirar endavant nous projectes i possibilitats. \n\nEl dia 24 de Febrer us tenim preparat una jornada completa de presentació de la Bioenginyeria. Amb un programa completíssim i variat (ja el podeu consultar al cartell oficial)\, centrarem el Workshop en tres grans blocs: \n\nPresentació de les principals branques de la Bioenginyeria. Pentintarem\, entre d’altres\, els biomaterials\, la manipulació cel·lular\, la nanotecnologia\, així com els principals projectes catalans i europeus. Quatre investigadors pioners en els seus camps ens mostraran els grans potencials d’aquestes branques.\nIntroducció a les principals tècniques que han fet avançar la bioenginyeria: Impresora 3D\, Organ-on-a-chip i CRISPR. Descobrirem aquestes tècniques les quals tots hem sentit a parlar i seran imprescindibles en un futur ben pròxim.\nTaula rodona i discussió informal amb joves bioenginyers i bioenginyeres. Tindrem la oportunitat de sentir l’experiència i compartir un pica-pica amb diferents perfils de doctorands i doctors en bioenginyeria. Des de la microscopia o l’optogenètica\, fins la indústria mèdica\, passant per la reprogramació cel·lular.\n\nQualsevol estudiant o professional amb motivacions per la Bioenginyeria serà més que benvingut. SUMMARY:Bioengineering Workshop - ASBTEC & IBEC
DESCRIPTION:Després de l’èxit del Workshop de Biologia Sintètica que vam organitzar des de l’ASBTEC ara fa un any\, tenim l’honor de presentar-vos un nou Workshop sobre Bioenginyeria\, organitzat conjuntament amb l’Institut de Bioenginyeria de Catalunya (IBEC). Aquest camp de les biociències s’ha posat tant de moda per la incorporació sistemàtica de noves tecnologies (especialment les d’escales microscòpiques) a la biologia clàssica per tal de tirar endavant nous projectes i possibilitats. \n\nEl dia 24 de Febrer us tenim preparat una jornada completa de presentació de la Bioenginyeria. Amb un programa completíssim i variat (ja el podeu consultar al cartell oficial)\, centrarem el Workshop en tres grans blocs: \n\nPresentació de les principals branques de la Bioenginyeria. Pentintarem\, entre d’altres\, els biomaterials\, la manipulació cel·lular\, la nanotecnologia\, així com els principals projectes catalans i europeus. Quatre investigadors pioners en els seus camps ens mostraran els grans potencials d’aquestes branques.\nIntroducció a les principals tècniques que han fet avançar la bioenginyeria: Impresora 3D\, Organ-on-a-chip i CRISPR. Descobrirem aquestes tècniques les quals tots hem sentit a parlar i seran imprescindibles en un futur ben pròxim.\nTaula rodona i discussió informal amb joves bioenginyers i bioenginyeres. Tindrem la oportunitat de sentir l’experiència i compartir un pica-pica amb diferents perfils de doctorands i doctors en bioenginyeria. Des de la microscopia o l’optogenètica\, fins la indústria mèdica\, passant per la reprogramació cel·lular.\n\nQualsevol estudiant o professional amb motivacions per la Bioenginyeria serà més que benvingut. DESCRIPTION:El present i el futur de la Fibrosi Quística\n27/04/16\nEl dimecres 27 d’abril\, amb motiu del dia Nacional de la Fibrosi Quística\, l’IBEC organitza la jornada divulgativa “El present i el futur de la Fibrosi Quística”\, amb l’objectiu de conscienciar a la societat sobre la incidència d’aquesta malaltia\, informar dels aspectes clínics i donar a conèixer els resultats que s’estan assolint en el camp de la recerca. \nLa Fibrosi Quística és una malaltia genètica i hereditària que està present des de la concepció. Es calcula que cada any neixen a Catalunya uns 14 nens afectats per aquesta malaltia\, el que la converteix en la malaltia genètica hereditària més freqüent. Les estadístiques permeten afirmar que un de cada 25 individus és portador del gen de la malaltia\, el que significa\, per exemple\, que a Espanya hi ha d’1\,5 a 2 milions de persones portadores del gen de la Fibrosi Quística. \nGràcies a l’estudi genètic de la Fibrosi Quística\, s’ha experimentat grans avenços en els últims anys que han permès desenvolupar la investigació en diferents àmbits. La jornada està organitzada en estreta col·laboració amb l’Associació Catalana de Fibrosi Quística (ACFQ)\, que va néixer amb l’objectiu de lluitar per millorar la qualitat de vida dels malalts i de les seves famílies\, i té el suport de Pessics de Ciència\, projecte dedicat a fomentar la ciència fent-la propera\, atractiva i entenedora. \nL’esdeveniment s’articularà en dues activitats; una xerrada divulgativa per a estudiants de batxillerat\, i una taula rodona\, “Present i futur de la Fibrosi Quística: pacients\, clínica i recerca”\, dirigida al públic general que comptarà amb la presència de diferents personalitats\, experts clínics\, investigadors i representants de pacients. \n10:00 – 13:00: Xerrada divulgativa dirigida a alumnes de secundària\n19:00 – 20:30: Taula rodona “Present i futur de la Fibrosi Quística: pacients\, clínica i recerca” \nRegistration: https://ibecbarcelona.eu/events/Fibrosis-Quistica/registro.html

DESCRIPTION:LabDisk\, a multi-purpose\, multi-target diagnostic platform for patient management and surveillance at the point-of-care\nDr. Konstantinos Mitsakakis\, Hahn-Schickard & IMTEK\, Department of Microsystems Engineering\, University of Freiburg\, Germany\nThe LabDisk is a CD-shaped microfluidic platform with all reagents integrated for on-site sample-to-answer diagnosis of single or multiple infectious diseases stemming from parasites\, bacteria\, viruses\, or co-infections of theirs. Through “composite” diagnosis\, by combining molecular diagnostics and protein biomarker detection\, the LabDisk offers increased reliability in pathogen species identification. Its modular nature enables the creation of a “disc library” for different sample matrices\, and the rapid adaptation to end-users’ requests (endemic needs\, sudden epidemics outbreaks). \nThe presentation will consist of two sections: (1) description of the LabDisk and its operating principle (modularity\, multiplexity\, fully integrated sample preparation); and (2) an overview of the current infectious disease-related applications\, in particular: neonatal sepsis\, respiratory tract infections\, antibiotic resistance\, febrile tropical infections (malaria\, dengue\, pneumonia\, typhoid)\, mosquito/vector control. \nDr. Mitsakakis has been invited by Xavier Fernàndez Busquets\, Head of Nanomalaria Joint Unit
