SUMMARY:Barcelona Cognition\, Brain and Technology Summer School (BCBT2018)
DESCRIPTION:Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia\, Barcelona\, Spain\n 3-14 September 2018\n specs.ibecbarcelona.eu/bcbt2018 \nJoin us for the annual “Barcelona Cognition\, Brain and Technology summer school – BCBT2018 ” to be held 3-14 September 2018 in Barcelona\, Spain. \nThe summer school has been part of a series of events organized by the European coordination action Convergent Science Network of Biomimetics and Neurotechnology (http://csnetwork.eu/).  For the 2018 edition of the BCBT summer school\, we are counting on the support of the Human Brain Project (HBP\, www.humanbrainproject.eu/en)\, IBEC and the UPC Campus Besòs (www.eebe.upc.edu/ca/lescola). \nThis is the 11th edition of BCBT\, which has run with great success in previous years thanks to an excellent line-up of outstanding speakers including Nobel Laureate winner Edvard Moser and luminaries in the fields of neurosciences\, psychology\, biology\, robotics and AI\, such as M. Arbib\, S. Grilner\, G. Rizzolatti\, among many. (see bcbt.upf.edu for previous editions). \nThe BCBT lectures are available online at the ConvergentScienceNetwork_lectures youtube channel with the BCBT podcast interviews with many of the BCBT speakers. (http://csnetwork.eu/talks/podcast) \nBCBT caters to students and researchers involved in projects that are in the ambit of “BIO-ICT convergence”\, “Brain Inspired ICT”\, “Cognitive systems-robotics”\, “Cognitive and neural systems”\, “Foundations of social cognition”. The BCBT school promotes a shared systems-level understanding of the functional architecture of the brain and its possible emulation in artificial systems. \nBCBT will offer up to 30 student slots for the practical workshops\, while as many researchers can register to attend the presentations and discussion sessions as they are interested. The atmosphere of the BCBT summer school is informal with the goal to stimulate in-depth discussion. There are 2 or 3 presentations in the morning\, with the afternoons reserved for tutorials and projects for student participants and senior scientists with road-mapping workshops and further discussion. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with the research infrastructure developed in the HBP. \nFor the 2018 edition\, we plan a 1st week of the school addressing System level understanding of the brain and its emulation in advanced technology. The 2nd week will include presentations aimed at the investigation of Learning and Memory\, Brain Function and Behavior. Friday 14th September is reserved for the presentation of the student projects to which everybody is invited. \nApplication deadline: 20th July 2018 \nBCBT programme by:\n– Tony Prescott\, Sheffield University\, UK\n–  Paul Verschure. ICREA and IBEC Barcelona\, ES\n–  Anna Mura\, IBEC Barcelona\, ES \nIn collaboration with:\n– Viktoria Tipotsch\, HBP Education Programme\, AT

SUMMARY:Jornada sobre Nanotoxicidad
\nhttp://events.ibecbarcelona.eu/nanotoxicidad/

SUMMARY:SciDF@Bars: "Del Laboratorio al Parlamento: Asesoramiento Científico"
DESCRIPTION:Many political issues are related to science and technology: climate change\, vaccines\, ciber-security or the use of glyphosate are some examples of how science gets onto the politic agenda. \nFor all those issues scientific advice is needed: How does it work? Which different models exist? How is science advice organised in different regions of the world and\, specially\, in Spain and Catalunya? \nIn this SciDF@Bars\, we will discuss with experts and perform a study case to talk about it while having some beers and networking with friends. \nJoin us next Thursday\, 26th April at 19:15h in Mau Mau! \nThe entrance fee is 5€\, with one beer included*. Event language: SPANISH \n*The fee for the event helps to finance the activities of Scientists Dating Forum\, whose complete spectrum of activities you can find on www.scientistsdatingforum.org.

SUMMARY:Faster Future 2017: A muscle-on-a-chip for muscular dystrophy
DESCRIPTION:This #GivingTuesday\, help accelerate scientific research into muscular dystrophy\n** Update: The Faster Future website is now open for donations! ** \nFaster Future (#IBECfasterfuture)\, launched in time for Giving Tuesday 2017\, is IBEC’s new fundraising initiative. We’re inviting people to help us accelerate scientific research by supporting projects that are at an advanced stage in tackling major challenges in health. \nIBEC’s Faster Future project for this year\, led by Dr. Javier Ramon\, will develop a new platform – a ‘muscle-on-a-chip’ – that uses a patient’s own cells to study myotonic dystrophy type 1\, a progressive disability that begins in adulthood and affects 50\,000 people in Spain alone. As well as modelling the patient’s disease in a personalized way\, the platform will also allow the study of different drugs or treatments in conditions that mimic the body as closely as possible\, as well as offering a more reliable alternative to animal models. \nOur crowdfunding campaign in 2017 aims to raise the 25\,000€ needed to carry out the last phases of the project: equipping the chip’s muscle tissue with biosensors\, validating the platform and drug testing. \nAt the moment\, there are no equivalent technologies like it in the world. If we can raise at least 18\,000€\, these final phases of the project could begin in January 2018\, and a prototype of a muscular tissue platform on-a-chip could be available by the end of 2019. With everybody’s help\, we can advance the arrival of this personalized solution to be able to bring it to patients as soon as possible. \nThis #GivingTuesday\, please help us make this medicine of the future a reality!
