Science is everywhere\, and often\, social organisations have to take decisions based on scientific research or with scientific implications. Moreover\, some science applications involve ethical issues\, which have to be addressed within communities. In this context\, communicating and popularizing science is a prerequisite for strengthening and deepening democratic mechanisms\, as it may strengthen the social participation of citizens with the appropriate scientific knowledge to participate in collective decisions\, with equal rights and responsibilities. In this talk\, the challenge and responsibility of scientists to contribute to science communication and popularisation will be addressed\, as well as the main principles ruling science popularisation.

Finding her calling in science journalism\, she went on to obtain a postgraduate diploma in journalism studies from Cardiff University\, with a bursary from the Association of British Science Writers. Since 2002\, Elisabeth has been working for Science Careers\, the online jobs and career guidance magazine of the journal Science – first in Cambridge as U.K. Editor and\, starting in 2004\, in Barcelona as Contributing Editor for Europe. Elisabeth has extensive experience covering a broad range of topics relevant to young scientists\, going from job and funding opportunities in academia to alternative careers and work-life balance. Elisabeth also regularly contributes Spanish and French news stories for Science and its policy blog Science Insider.

DESCRIPTION:“Turning science into business”\n \nErnest Mendoza\, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya / Goldemar Solutions \n\n(with an introduction by Dr. Arantxa Sanz\, IBEC) \nDr Ernest Mendoza\, leader of the Applied Nanomaterials research group at the Universitat Politècnica of Catalunya and General Manager and Founder of Goldemar Solution\, a spin-off of the same university\, will talk about his experience as an entrepreneur and how he succeeded in setting up a new company based on the results of his research. \nThe session will be introduced by Arantxa Sanz\, Head of the Knowledge Exchange Unit at IBEC\, who will give a short review of Intellectual Property and Tech Transfer issues at the institute.
