\nTo register cilck here

Her research focuses on the mechanobiology of cell adhesion\, investigating how cells interact with their physical environment at the molecular level.  \n  \n Prof. Dr. María García-Parajo\, Institute of Photonic Science (ICFO) & Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA). \nSingle molecule imaging tools to unravel  spatiotemporal compartmentalisation in living cells   \nOrganisation by compartmentalisation is a general property of natural systems that efficiently facilitates and orchestrates biological events in space and time. Super-resolution microscopy and single molecule dynamic approaches have revealed that compartmentalisation starts at the nanometre scale with molecules organising and interacting transiently with each other following modularity principles. In this talk\, I will provide an overview of recent super-resolution and single molecule dynamic approaches ideally tailored to study biological systems with exquisite spatiotemporal resolution. I will describe the combination of multicolour single particle tracking (SPT) at different labelling densities to resolve in real time multi-molecular interactions in living cells. Low density SPT conditions allows to reconstruct the mobility of individual molecules and their transient interactions\, while high density conditions provide unique information on the spatial and temporal length scales of cellular regions re-visited (or forbidden) for molecules. We find that molecular diffusion\, transient multi-molecular interactions and dynamic re-modelling of the environment play key roles regulating biological function.  \nMaria Garcia-Parajo is an ICREA Research Professor at ICFO-Institute of Photonic Sciences\, leading the Single Molecule Biophotonics group. Her research focuses on the development of advanced optical techniques to the study of biological processes at the single molecular level on living cells. She obtained her PhD in Physical Electronics in 1993 at Imperial Colleague\, UK.  Previous experience includes research at L2M-CNRS Paris (France) and University of Twente (The Netherlands). To date she has published more than 200 publications and delivered more than 250 talks at international conferences and workshops upon invitation. She coordinates several international research projects\, and is member of various international scientific advisory\, executive and editorial boards. She has received several prestigious awards\, including the Young Academy Research fellow award from the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (1998)\, National Prize in Biophysics (2017)\, Advanced ERC grant (2017) and Emmy Noether Laurate from the European Physical Society (2020). She is co-coordinator of the Winter School in Advanced Microscopy Techniques for the Master in Interdisciplinary Sciences at BIST. SUMMARY:Open Science (Spanish)
DESCRIPTION:CIENCIA ABIERTA Y PROPIEDAD INTELECTUAL \nOpen science and intellectual property (IP) regulation share the same fundamental objective of promoting innovation for social\, scientific and economic development. However\, there may be some tension due to the fact that IP rights can be used as a basis for controlling and managing the way in which protected subject matter can be accessed. The results of scientific research may result in scholarly articles or original databases that can be protected by copyright or inventions that can be protected by patents and other forms of intellectual property. Many open access initiatives\, repositories or collaborative projects operate on the basis of clear licensing of intellectual property. \nRegistro aquí: Ciencia Abierta y Propiedad Intelectual – NANOMED Spain

SUMMARY:THE BARCELONA BLOOD-BRAIN-BARRIER (B4) SYMPOSIUM
DESCRIPTION:To fulfil the promise of applying bioengineering to improve the lives of patients\, we need to adopt a holistic approach encompassing understanding of biological/pathological mechanisms\, development of engineered systems\, and consideration of clinical needs. Hence\, the B4 symposium\, by bringing together experts studying the BBB from a biological\, engineering and medical perspective\, will greatly aid IBEC in its goal of developing bioengineering solutions to deliver therapies against brain disorders. \nBarcelona is home to numerous research groups pushing forward the knowledge frontier of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and its role in brain disorders. To foment interaction across this community\, we are organizing the Barcelona Blood-Brain-Barrier (B4) symposium to bring the BBB-community of Barcelona together to discuss advances in the field. The event will focus on the mechanisms underlying BBB physiology (e.g.\, brain endothelial specialization\, neurovascular coupling\, molecular transport)\, its role in brain disorders (neurodegeneration\, infectious diseases\, cancer)\, and nano/bioengineering strategies to deliver therapies across the BBB. \nThe first edition of this symposium will take place on May 21st-22nd\, 2024. As our inaugural keynote speaker\, we have the honour to welcome Prof. Martin Lauritzen (Copenhagen University). Prof. Lauritzen has been instrumental in our understanding of regulation of cerebral blood-flow by the neurovascular unit\, nanoparticle transport dynamics across the BBB\, and in developing in vivo imaging systems to study the brain vasculature. \n\n\n\nCheck que program and register here.

SUMMARY:Workshop “Bioaction: The new tissue engineering approaches in bone infections"
DESCRIPTION:Workshop held in the framework of the EIC Pathfinder project BIOACTION “Bacteria biofilm as bio-factory for tissue regeneration” (Project Number 101098972). \nBIOACTION aims at developing a new methodology in implant technology based on functionalized bio-hydrogels that will convert the negative occurrence of biofilm-associated infections\, the primary cause of implant infections and failure\, into a positive resource. The main goal of BIOACTION is to transform implant-associated bacteria for the programmable production of specific proteins for in vivo cell recruitment and tissue regeneration\, exploiting gene sequences loaded on engineered liposomes and phages\, bound to hydrogel scaffolds. BIOACTION will develop new biomimetic substrates that can transform biofilm into extracellular matrix for the regeneration of target tissues. It will establish a high versatile technology to be used as injectable materials and implant coatings for periodontal and peri-implant infection treatments. The proposed approach will be validated in two clinically relevant animal models: dental implant and permanent transcutaneous bone. \nBIOACTION\, would radically advance the future of infection treatment by revolutionizing the classical approaches leading to the improvement of state of care\, health outcomes and to achieve huge socio-economic benefits. The project is strongly interdisciplinary in nature involving expertise biomaterials\, synthetic biology\, phage and liposome technology\, medicine. \nAs a results\, this innovative approach will bring the research and knowledge far beyond the current state-of-the-art and will lead\, through the planned validation\, as proof-of-concept of new materials and technique with a broader application in regenerative medicine. \nIn this workshop\, participants from all the institutions involved in the project will explain their research and activities. \n  \nChairs: Elisabeth Engel\, Luigi Ambrosio \n14:30 – Claudia Siverini and Marco Chittò (AO Foundation)\, “Bone infections and treatments” \n14:45 – Dorien Van Hede (Université de Liege)\, “Dental infections and treatments” \n15:00 – Diego Cotella (Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale)\, “Phages to control biofilms” \n15:15 – Dr. Cecilia Bombelli (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche – Instituto per i Sistemi biologici)\, “Liposomes in gene therapy” \n15:30 – Ramūnas Valiokas (Ferentis)\, “Crosslinked peptide hydrogels for tissue engineering and modeling” \n15:45 – Giovanna Gomez d’Ayala (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche – Instituto per i Polimeri\, Compositi e Biomateriali)\, “Hydrogels for tissue regeneration” \n16:00 – Oscar Castaño (IBEC)\, “Advanced characterization methodology” \n16:15 – Roberta Marzella (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche – IPCB) and Michela Candotti (IN Society) – “Tips on Management and Dissemination of European Projects” \n16:30 Discussion and conclusions

SUMMARY:Before mechanobiology had a name
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of three decades of cell biophysics research in Barcelona\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Barcelona area is currently recognized as an important hub for the scientific field of mechanobiology\, and of cell biophysics in general. This achievement is due to the work over decades of local scientists. Among them\, Prof. Daniel Navajas stands out as a pioneer in the field\, before it was even called mechanobiology. His work led to important scientific achievements in cell mechanics. Perhaps even more importantly\, his dedicated mentorship produced a new generation of scientists who have established their own labs and are currently expanding mechanobiology in new directions. \nOn the occasion of Prof. Navajas’s retirement\, we take the opportunity to celebrate Mechanobiology and cell biophysics\, with a symposium combining talks from former trainees and invited speakers. \nThe symposium will honor an exciting trajectory along three decades\, but will be focused on current\, ongoing research. As such\, it will be of interest to anyone interested in mechanobiology\, with or without a relationship to the work of Prof. Navajas.  \nRegistration here.
