SUMMARY:Transdisciplinary Approaches for Neuroblastoma therapy symposium
DESCRIPTION:This networking event brings together experts from different fields but with the same objective- to join forces to fight NB and accelerate new treatments discovery. To this end\, the main aim of the networking event is to share knowledge on Neuroblastoma between physicians\, researchers\, and members of patient advocacy organizations\, and build up a research consortium to actively participate in the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. \nThe symposium will be held at the Sant Joan de Deu Hospital in the greater Barcelona area (Spain); it will be carried out in four sessions to discuss new advancements in Neuroblastoma characterization and modeling\, cutting-edge technologies\, and current strategies for Neurblastoma therapy. \nThe network event will serve to bring knowledge for all participants\, build up new research networks\, and disseminate the event conclusions to the general public\, thanks to the support of the Association of Families and Friends of Children with Neuroblastoma (NEN). \nThe symposium encourages the participation of Early Career Researchers and enables involvement in the network of usually underrepresented countries in Europe. \nProgramme and registration here.

SUMMARY:14th IBEC Symposium - Bioengineering for Regenerative Therapies
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for the 14th IBEC Symposium on Bioengineering for Regenerative Therapies\nThe 14th IBEC Symposium will focus on one of our three main areas of application of research at IBEC: Regenerative Therapies. Although this year the pandemic situation has improved\, we still believe it is not safe enough to organize the symposium on-site. So\, this year’s edition will be also celebrated online. \nWe will use the same online platform as last year\, where all the talks will be streamed and posters will be available. To adapt to the online format\, the Symposium will be divided into two days. \nAll the scientific community is invited to participate. Attendees from IBEC and abroad are welcome to present their research in their own virtual space by submitting an abstract. Moreover\, some of these contributions will be selected by the scientific committee for an oral flash presentation. \nThis year we will evaluate your virtual space\, which you will be able to personalise and upload all kinds of material (both visual and written) to show the attendees your work\, if you abstract is selected. The evaluation will be carried out by a scientific committee and also by vote by the attendees\, so two awards will be given. \nAlso\, it is important that you submit your abstract and register at the same time. \n\nImportant deadlines:\nAbstract submission: 15/09/2021\nNotification of acceptance: 06/10/2021\nRegistration deadline: 26/10/2021 \n\n

SUMMARY:Tailored Nanopatterning Scaffolds for Musculoskeletal Tissue Regeneration (1st Annual Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:Tailored Nanopatterning Scaffolds for Musculoskeletal Tissue Regeneration (1st Annual Meeting)\nOrganized by: Josep Samitier and Anna Lagunas\nMusculoskeletal conditions are the second largest contributor to disability worldwide with an estimated US$30 billion spent annually on their management in the USA alone. The limited regenerative capacity of many of the tissues from the musculoskeletal system fostered the research on alternatives to the common surgical procedures\, including stem cell therapies. For that\, the development of preconditioning methods is mandatory to ensure an efficient implantation and overall success. Since nanometric environmental inputs are a paramount factor influencing cell behavior\, including stem cell migration and differentiation\, stem cell-based tissue engineering strategies are increasingly including nanoscale considerations when designing cell environments to better mimic native homeostatic conditions and drive cells towards development of the desired tissue. Within the framework of the Intramural collaboration of CIBER BBN “Tailored Nanopatterning Scaffolds for Musculoskeletal Tissue Regeneration”\, the members of the consortium meet in Barcelona at IBEC presenting their contributions to the topic. \n  \n\n\n\n09:30-10:00\nWelcome. SUMMARY:IBEC B·Debate: Bioengineering for Healthy Ageing: Adding Life to Years
DESCRIPTION:Bioengineering for Healthy Ageing: Adding Life to Years\nCosmoCaixa Barcelona. C/ Isaac Newton 26\, Barcelona\nDemographic change and well-being have been identified as major societal challenges. The rapid growth of the oldest age groups will have a major impact on health care costs. Engineering must play a substantial role managing the effects of this surge in demand for healthcare and providing care to be delivered in new ways. In concrete\, biomedical engineering underpins many of the actions required to improve the quality of life of older people\, including medical\, social and infrastructure needs\, so that the degree of independence and activity for ageing citizens can be improved. \nThere is a growing need for innovative medical technology solutions that contribute to our concept of healthy ageing. Technical innovation can provide solutions such as telemetry\, distant-virtual consulting and checking\, the automation of processes\, and robot technology. Intelligent implants that use new design methods\, materials\, and software can keep patients mobile and fit as long as possible. Early recognition using accurate diagnostic equipment that employs imaging techniques\, lab-on-chip analysis\, and advanced sensors can reduce treatment costs and improve recovery rates. As a consequence\, medical care can be provided at home\, in the patient’s personal environment\, instead of in a hospital. Regenerative medicine can as well offer a solution to major clinical needs related to ageing such as heart strokes\, central/peripheral nerves damage\, osteoporosis or ulcers. \nThis B·Debate\, an initiative of Biocat and “la Caixa” Foundation\, is jointly co-organized by the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and will highlight the challenges an ageing population will have to face in terms of health and wellbeing and the possible solutions bioengineering can provide. The following hot technological topics will revolutionize healthcare and assistance to aged people: M-Health\, Robotics for assisted living\, Point of care diagnostics and Regenerative therapies. \nRegister here before 7th November.

SUMMARY:From the Science of Memory to the Future of Neuroengineering
DESCRIPTION:From the Science of Memory to the Future of Neuroengineering\nwith\nNobel Laureate Edvard Moser\, Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience\nPaul F.M.J. Verschure\, ICREA\, Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC)\nIBEC’s research experts in different technologies – nanotechnology\, biotechnology\, cell engineering\, information technology and cognitive science – have been working hard for a decade to generate new knowledge and solutions for health\, with three major pillars of application in mind: Bioengineering for Future Medicine\, Bioengineering for Regenerative Therapies and Bioengineering for Active Ageing. The latter is where IBEC’s advances in minimally invasive sensors\, signal treatment\, data analysis or robotics are helping develop technologies to cope with the challenges of an ageing population. \nTo strengthen IBEC’s Bioengineering for Active Ageing programme\, and in particular its neuroengineering area\, the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) gained a world-renowned neuroscientist and psychologist with the recruitment in July 2017 of ICREA professor and ERC grantee Paul Verschure and his Synthetic Perceptive\, Emotive and Cognitive Systems group (SPECS). \nTo celebrate and introduce this new research group\, IBEC is looking forward to welcoming Nobel Laureate Edvard Moser\, Founding Director of Trondheim’s Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience and Co-Director of the Centre for Neural Computation\, to Barcelona in September. \nAt a special event held at Palau Macaya and supported by Obra Social “La Caixa”\, which actively collaborates with IBEC in its Active Ageing programme\, Prof. Moser will talk about his pioneering work into the basic neural computations that underlie cognition and behavior – research that has completely overturned prior conventional thinking in the field. In 2014 he and May-Britt Moser won\, together with John O’Keefe\, the Nobel Prize in Physiology for their discovery of ‘grid cells’ in the medial entorhinal cortex\, a little-understood region next to the hippocampus. These place-modulated neurons are what the brain uses to calculate the position of the organism in its spatial environment\, as their firing fields define a triangular array across the entire environment that provides the brain with an internal coordination system – not unlike GPS – that is essential for navigation. \nThis findings may have enourmous implications in brain disorders that affect episodic memory\, including dementia and disease\, as they pave the way to a better understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying spatial memory\, which has been shown to deteriorate in mouse models of Alzheimer’s. \nIn addition to Prof. Moser’s talk\, Prof. Verschure will give an overview of how his SPECS group will fit into the research strategy of IBEC. The arrival of SPECS at the institute represents a boost to the neuroengineering research being carried out at the institute and its Bioengineering for Active Ageing programme\, and represents a solid drive towards making life science quantitative on any scale by taking full advantage of the unprecedented power of the convergence between nano\, bio and ICT (information and communications technology). \nLike IBEC\, SPECS includes physicists\, psychologists\, biologists\, engineers and computer scientists\, and will contribute greatly to IBEC’s clinical translation efforts with its strong collaborations with hospitals on rehabilitation and recovery after stroke\, epilepsy and other brain diseases. In addition\, it will further strengthen the insitute’s bioinformatics and neuroinformatics capabilities.

SUMMARY:B·Debate: Future Tools for Biomedical Research: in vitro\, in silico and in vivo disease modeling
DESCRIPTION:The increasing costs of biomedical research and drug discovery and the continually rising numbers of compound failures provoke an urgent need for novel tools for basic research and preclinical testing of drugs. \nThe cross-breeding of nanotechnologies\, life and computational sciences is harnessing enabling technologies for drug discovery\, development\, toxicity testing and disease modeling. These advances can move in vitro cell and tissue cultures beyond the current state-of-the-art\, which poorly reflect patient physiology\, and create “in vivo human-like” platforms that allow cheaper and efficient drug and toxicity assays. \nAt the same time\, important efforts are being made to create improved animal and computational models to better mimic human physiology in health and disease. \nUnder this framework\, the B·Debate “Future Tools for Biomedical Research: In Vitro\, In Silico and In Vivo Disease Modeling”\, coorganized by B·Debate and  IBEC\, is an opportunity to debate with experts and professionals of the field to review experiences and best practices and to identify and address barriers in the development and adoption of advanced methods for disease modeling\, with a potential to revolutionize preclinical research in particular\, and the validation and commercialization of new therapies and diagnostics at large. \nVisit the website for more details.
