SUMMARY:Ibec seminar. Dr Remy Chiaffarelli
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid PET/MR Imaging of Tumour Physiology: from Perfusion to Extracellular Lactate\nDr Remy Chiaffarelli\, Eberhard Karls University Tübingen \n\nTumour progression is driven by metabolic and vascular changes that shape the tumour microenvironment. We developed new hybrid PET/MRI probes to detect and quantify tumour physiology and its compartmentalization\, with a focus on extracellular lactate and perfusion. By combining responsive CEST MRI contrast agents with PET-based quantification\, these probes provide complementary functional and quantitative information for preclinical metabolic imaging. Our findings demonstrate the value of these approaches for characterising tumour heterogeneity and metabolic dynamics\, providing insights into cancer biology and supporting the development of more precise imaging biomarker.

SUMMARY:Thematic Network. Final Retreat NET QUASI: Ways of Seeing
DESCRIPTION:Ways of Seeing \nNature is a master designer\, shaping molecules\, materials\, organisms\, and ecosystems through interactions across scales. Yet many of its most remarkable strategies remain hidden in plain sight\, waiting to be revealed through careful observation. Scientific discovery often begins not with a hypothesis\, but with a way of seeing: the ability to notice patterns\, ask unexpected questions\, and look at familiar phenomena from a different perspective. \nWith this retreat\, we would like to celebrate observation as a catalyst for curiosity\, understanding\, discovery\, and innovation. Together\, we will reflect on how attentiveness to the natural world inspires new ideas\, challenges existing assumptions\, and opens pathways to scientific and technological breakthroughs. Through the exchange of perspectives and experiences\, we hope to explore how careful observation can transform wonder into understanding\, and how insights from nature can inspire entirely new ways of designing \nAgenda: \n14:30 – 14:45 : Opening Remarks \n14:45 – 16:00: Keynote Lecture \n16:00–16:20 : Snack & Refreshments break \n16:20 – 17:50 : Documentary Screening: Observer. Director: Ian Cheney \n17:50 – 18:35: Round Table Discussion \nWays of Seeing: What Can Nature Still Teach Us? \n18:35: Closing Remarks \n  \nTo register click here.

SUMMARY:Ibec Seminar. Dr. Gonzalo Gabriel
DESCRIPTION:Metabolic Phenotypes to Molecular Imaging: New MRI Technologies for Precision Medicine\nPrecision metabolic phenotyping has the potential to transform biomedical research and medicine by enabling early disease detection\, real-time monitoring of treatment response\, and personalized medicine. However\, comprehensive metabolic characterization remains challenging because it often requires multiple imaging modalities and complex\, time-consuming protocols.\nIn this talk\, I will present novel MRI technologies aimed at making metabolic imaging faster\, more comprehensive\, and accessible. I will first introduce efficient acquisition and reconstruction methods for simultaneous anatomical and metabolic imaging. I will then discuss hyperpolarized molecular probes and imaging strategies for real-time visualization of metabolism. Finally\, I will present the development of low-field MRI platforms for portable\, low-cost multinuclear and molecular imaging. Together\, these approaches seek to bridge MR physics\, molecular engineering\, bioengineering\, and translational imaging\, establishing MRI as a versatile platform for quantitative metabolic phenotyping. \nBio sketch\nDr. Gonzalo Gabriel Rodriguez is a physicist specialized in multinuclear magnetic resonance and advanced biomedical imaging. He is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences\, following research experience at NYU School of Medicine and the National University of Córdoba\, Argentina. His research spans quantitative MRI\, hyperpolarization\, and low-field MRI\, with a particular focus on translating fundamental MR physics into innovative tools for biomedical research and clinical applications. He is an ISMRM Junior Fellow and a recipient of the Paul Callaghan Young Investigator Award

SUMMARY:Ibec Seminar. Sara Mederos
DESCRIPTION:Brainwide circuits for adaptive decisions in response to threat\nSara Mederos\, neuroscientist and Ramón y Cajal group leader of NeuCompLab at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute  \nTo understand adaptive behavior\, we must understand how decisions are computed and updated through experience. For example\, when facing a potential threat\, animals may initially rely on  instinctive responses\, such as escape\, yet with experience they can suppress these reactions as the environment is reinterpreted. In this talk\, I will show how these transformations arise from  interactions between cortical and subcortical circuits that dynamically reshape decision  variables in aversive contexts. \nUsing an ethologically grounded paradigm in which mice escape from an overhead looming  stimulus that mimics an aerial predator\, I will show that repeated exposure leads to suppression of this instinctive response. We find that higher visual areas instruct this learning through projections to the inhibitory ventrolateral geniculate nucleus (vLGN). Neural population recordings reveal that specific vLGN neurons increase their activity across learning and are necessary for the expression of escape suppression\, indicating that cortical inputs instruct learning\, while plasticity within vLGN implements the learned behavioral change. \nI will then extend this framework to show how vLGN integrates inputs from retrosplenial cortex and hypothalamic circuits to regulate decisions between safety and exploration. These pathways carry distinct signals related to prior experience and internal state\, and their coordinated activity shapes when animals decide to leave safety. ogether\, these results reveal circuit mechanisms through which experience reshapes decision-making in aversive environments.\nFinally\, I will present ongoing work showing how acute stress induces persistent changes in hippocampal dynamics\, linking experience-dependent updating of threat with longer-lasting circuit adaptations that may be relevant for anxiety and PTSD. \n\nSara Mederos is a neuroscientist and Ramón y Cajal group leader of NeuCompLab at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute in Barcelona (neucomplab.com). She trained in \nBiochemistry and Neuroscience and completed her PhD in Perea’s lab at the Instituto Cajal (CSIC)\, where she studied communication between neurons and astrocytes\, contributing to \ndemonstrate that these cells actively participate in synaptic plasticity\, learning\, and goaldirected behaviour (Glia\, 2019; Nature Neuroscience\, 2021). During this period she also developed short research stays at the Buzsáki Lab (NYU) and the Ponomarenko Lab (HHU Düsseldorf). She subsequently developed her postdoctoral research in Hofer’s lab at the \nSainsbury Wellcome Centre\, University College London\, and later as an independent PI supported by a Wellcome Trust Early Career Award\, where she dissected the neuronal circuits and mechanisms underlying how experience and learning can modify instinctive responses such as fear (Science\, 2025). Her laboratory studies how the brain integrates information about the environment\, prior experience\, and internal states to make flexible decisions. Her research integrates advanced neuroscience techniques\, including in vivo electrophysiology in freely moving mice\, optogenetics\, in vitro electrophysiology\, and serial-section two-photon imaging\, to dissect the neural circuits underlying flexible decision-making. This work has provided new insights into how cortical and subcortical circuits interact to support learned safety and adaptive behaviour. Her research is supported by competitive international funding from the European Research Council\, the Wellcome Trust\, the AEI\, the BBRF\, and the BBVA Foundation. Among other recognitions\, she has received the FENS EJN Young Investigator Prize\, the Janett Rosenberg Trubatch Career Development Award\, and the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Spain Award\, and was selected as a finalist for the Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology
