Transmitida por par\u00e1sitos del g\u00e9nero <em>Leishmania<\/em> a trav\u00e9s de la picadura del fleb\u00f3tomo, un insecto similar al mosquito, las formas cut\u00e1nea y visceral de la enfermedad son end\u00e9micas en Europa, con el 80% de los casos cut\u00e1neos concentrados en el Mediterr\u00e1neo Oriental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los medicamentos actuales para tratar esta enfermedad enfrentan desaf\u00edos como resistencia, toxicidad y costos elevados. Por ello, es urgente identificar nuevos agentes terap\u00e9uticos con enfoques innovadores para abordar estas dificultades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En este contexto, un equipo liderado por el grupo de investigaci\u00f3n de <a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/es\/nanomalaria\">Nanomalaria<\/a> del IBEC y el Instituto de Salud Global de Barcelona (ISGlobal) ha explorado un enfoque innovador para tratar la leishmaniosis basado en los hallazgos recientes en malaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Sorprendentemente, YAT2150 result\u00f3 ser muy efectivo tambi\u00e9n contra la leishmaniosis, situ\u00e1ndonos en una posici\u00f3n \u00fanica, ya que ambas enfermedades son las principales causas de mortalidad por par\u00e1sitos en humanos.<\/p>\n<cite>Xavier Fern\u00e0ndez Busquets<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>La investigaci\u00f3n, publicada en la revista cient\u00edfica <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.asm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1128\/aac.01127-23\"><em>Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy<\/em><\/a>, se centra en la acci\u00f3n <em>in vitro<\/em> del compuesto YAT2150, originalmente dise\u00f1ado como un potente medicamento contra la malaria. \u201cEn el marco de un proyecto anterior centrado en mejorar la eficacia de f\u00e1rmacos conocidos contra la malaria mediante encapsulaci\u00f3n, surgi\u00f3 la idea de probar el compuesto YAT2150. Sorprendentemente, result\u00f3 ser muy efectivo tambi\u00e9n contra la leishmaniosis, situ\u00e1ndonos en una posici\u00f3n \u00fanica, ya que ambas enfermedades son las principales causas de mortalidad por par\u00e1sitos en humanos.\u201d, explica Xavier Fern\u00e0ndez Busquets, l\u00edder del estudio e investigador principal de IBEC-ISGlobal<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los resultados del estudio sugieren que YAT2150 podr\u00eda actuar inhibiendo la agregaci\u00f3n de prote\u00ednas en las c\u00e9lulas de <em>Leishmania<\/em>, el mismo modo de acci\u00f3n que ya se ha observado en el par\u00e1sito de la malaria. Esta capacidad de actuar eficazmente contra ambos, <em>Plasmodium<\/em> y <em>Leishmania<\/em>, posiciona a YAT2150 como un candidato prometedor para el tratamiento de coinfecciones de ambos par\u00e1sitos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actualmente, el equipo trabaja para avanzar hacia la siguiente fase de la investigaci\u00f3n, que implica probar el f\u00e1rmaco en modelos de leishmaniosis en rat\u00f3n. Un paso crucial hacia el desarrollo de un tratamiento innovador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>El poder de la encapsulaci\u00f3n<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>El trabajo tambi\u00e9n aborda los efectos de encapsular el f\u00e1rmaco dentro de liposomas. Esta estrategia no solo ampl\u00eda su ventana terap\u00e9utica, potenciando su letalidad contra el par\u00e1sito y reduciendo la toxicidad para el resto de c\u00e9lulas, sino que tambi\u00e9n permite dirigir el f\u00e1rmaco espec\u00edficamente a las zonas del cuerpo de inter\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Hemos dado con algunos f\u00e1rmacos derivados del YAT2150 que muestran \u00edndices de selectividad para el par\u00e1sito de la malaria de 1.000, 2.000 o incluso 3.000. Son resultados muy prometedores.<\/p>\n<cite>Luc\u00eda Rom\u00e1n-\u00c1lamo<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Por otro lado, un indicador clave para conocer la especificidad de acci\u00f3n de un f\u00e1rmaco es el \u00edndice de selectividad: \u201cPara que un f\u00e1rmaco sea considerado para llegar a fases de desarrollo y ensayos cl\u00ednicos, su \u00edndice de selectividad debe ser mayor a 100. En nuestro caso, hemos dado con algunos f\u00e1rmacos derivados del YAT2150 que muestran \u00edndices de selectividad para el par\u00e1sito de la malaria de 1.000, 2.000 o incluso 3.000.
