El n\u00facleo de la c\u00e9lula (ADN) est\u00e1 marcado en azul, el citoesqueleto est\u00e1 marcado en rojo (actina) y verde (miosina).<\/h6>\n<p>Este grupo de investigaci\u00f3n del IBEC, que focaliza su investigaci\u00f3n en la habilidad de las c\u00e9lulas para migrar en el interior de los organismos vivos -un proceso crucial que est\u00e1 implicado en un amplio rango de fen\u00f3menos del desarrollo y de las enfermedades\u2013 ha publicado su descubrimiento en la revista Physical Review Letters.<\/p>\n<p>El descubrimiento ha sido posible gracias a una nueva t\u00e9cnica llamada auto-reolog\u00eda que les permite estudiar el comportamiento de algunos materiales vivos a escalas de tiempo muy lentas, lo cual resulta complejo debido a que requiere aplicar fuerzas controladas o deformaciones por un largo periodo de tiempo. Utilizando esta t\u00e9cnica, Xavier Trepat y sus colegas han detectado que las c\u00e9lulas est\u00e1n aplicando fuerzas unas sobre otras de forma constante. \u201cCon esta habilidad natural de las c\u00e9lulas, la de empujarse y estirarse unas a otras, no tenemos que aplicarles ninguna fuerza adicional para estudiarlas, solo tenemos que dejarlas a ellas hacerlo y entonces analizar las fuerzas y las deformaciones resultantes\u00bb, explica Romarinc Vincent, primer autor del art\u00edculo.<\/p>\n<p>Los resultados se consideran sorprendentes y novedosos porque siempre se hab\u00eda pensado que las c\u00e9lulas vivas se comportaban como l\u00edquidos a escalas de tiempo muy largas, pero los experimentos demuestran que se comportan como s\u00f3lidos. \u201cNo importa cu\u00e1nto tiempo esperas, las c\u00e9lulas nunca fluyen\u201d dice Xavier Trepat. \u201cCuando se vierte un l\u00edquido en un recipiente, independientemente de su densidad, tarde o temprano se adaptar\u00e1 a su forma, y cuando se le aplica una fuerza, como cuando agitas una taza de caf\u00e9, fluye. Sin embargo, los materiales s\u00f3lidos, como por ejemplo una banda el\u00e1stica o un muelle, no fluyen, cuando cesa la fuerza externa aplicada vuelven a su forma original\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>La clave se encuentra en el \u201ccomportamiento activo\u201d de las c\u00e9lulas. La ciencia de los materiales tradicional no predice este tipo de comportamientos, porque las c\u00e9lulas no son materiales tradicionales; son \u201cmateriales activos\u201d. A diferencia de los materiales comunes, las c\u00e9lulas son capaces de consumir energ\u00eda y transformarla en una fuerza, en un movimiento o una deformaci\u00f3n.
