Estos tejidos son fundamentales para la vida, ya que protegen el cuerpo de la radiaci\u00f3n, los contaminantes y de los pat\u00f3genos. El n\u00facleo celular se muestra en azul, los filamentos de actina en rojo y los filamentos de queratina en verde.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cLa mayor\u00eda de los materiales no toleran bien un gran estiramiento. A medida que se van deformando, intentan volver a su estado relajado inicial &#8211; como una goma el\u00e1stica -, pudiendo llegar a romperse cuando la tensi\u00f3n sea muy elevada\u00bb, dice Marino Arroyo, catedr\u00e1tico de la Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya e investigador asociado del IBEC. El equipo descubri\u00f3 que los tejidos epiteliales tienen un comportamiento mec\u00e1nico diferente e inusual. Para su sorpresa, los epitelios no se rompieron durante la deformaci\u00f3n, y recuperaron su tama\u00f1o inicial de manera totalmente reversible al cesar la tensi\u00f3n. Pero lo menos previsible fue ver c\u00f3mo algunas c\u00e9lulas del tejido apenas se deformaban, mientras que otras lo hac\u00edan de forma extrema, aumentando su \u00e1rea m\u00e1s de diez veces.<\/p>\n<p>Los autores han identificado los mecanismos moleculares que explican este comportamiento f\u00edsico, al que denominan \u00absuperelasticidad activa\u00bb en analog\u00eda con el comportamiento de algunas aleaciones met\u00e1licas de alta tecnolog\u00eda utilizadas en aplicaciones m\u00e9dicas. A medida que el tejido se estira, las c\u00e9lulas que lo componen tienen la habilidad de mantenerse en un estado relajado o bien cambiar hacia un estado s\u00faperdeformado sin que esto les cause ninguna \u201cmolestia\u201d. Como consecuencia, estos tejidos pueden soportar una deformaci\u00f3n creciente gracias a que sus c\u00e9lulas van cambiando progresivamente a su estado s\u00faperdeformado sin aumentar la tensi\u00f3n, lo que de otra forma comprometer\u00eda la integridad o la cohesi\u00f3n del tejido.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abTodos estamos familiarizados con superh\u00e9roes como Ms. Marvel o Los Incre\u00edbles, que son capaces de deformar sus cuerpos m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de los l\u00edmites humanos.
