Actualmente, la mayor parte de las terapias se basan en la cirug\u00eda despu\u00e9s de la lesi\u00f3n. Sin embargo, estas intervenciones gozan de una eficiencia moderada a la hora de restablecer las funciones perdidas.<\/p>\n<p>Ahora, un grupo de investigadores del Instituto de Bioingenier\u00eda de Catalu\u00f1a (IBEC) liderados por Jos\u00e9 Antonio del R\u00edo, investigador principal del Grupo de Neurobiolog\u00eda Molecular y Celular del IBEC, y Arnau Hervera, investigador postdoctoral del mismo grupo, han desarrollado un dispositivo \u2013<em>lab-on-a-chip<\/em>\u2013 para estudiar y reparar lesiones del sistema nervioso combinado dos tecnolog\u00edas basadas en la bioingenier\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>Se trata de la microflu\u00eddica -que utiliza sistemas que procesan o manipulan cantidades peque\u00f1as de fluidos mediante canales con el objetivo de estudiar la respuesta a diferentes est\u00edmulos- y de la optogen\u00e9tica \u2013que combina la gen\u00e9tica y la \u00f3ptica para controlar la actividad de las neuronas-. Esta \u00faltima es especialmente \u00fatil en neurobiolog\u00eda porque permite modelar la actividad celular s\u00f3lo mediante cambios de luz, sin necesidad de usar la estimulaci\u00f3n el\u00e9ctrica, que es m\u00e1s inespec\u00edfica y puede da\u00f1ar las c\u00e9lulas.<\/p>\n<p>Gracias a la combinaci\u00f3n de ambas los expertos han descubierto que el m\u00fasculo manda se\u00f1ales regenerativas a las neuronas con el fin de promover su reconexi\u00f3n y reestablecer las funciones y el control de la contracci\u00f3n perdido despu\u00e9s de una lesi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan Arnau Hervera, este descubrimiento \u201cpermite entender mejor los mecanismos subyacentes a las lesiones de motoneuronas\u201d, un tipo de c\u00e9lulas encargadas de producir los est\u00edmulos que provocan la contracci\u00f3n de los diferentes grupos musculares del organismo. En este sentido, el investigador a\u00f1ade que el hallazgo \u201cabre una ventana para que en un futuro se puedan mejorar los efectos de las terapias de rehabilitaci\u00f3n actuales\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Todo esto se recoge en un <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4409\/9\/2\/302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">estudio<\/a> realizado con c\u00e9lulas de ratones y publicado recientemente en la revista especializada <em>Cells<\/em> del que se desprende que un aumento de la actividad muscular es capaz de inducir la regeneraci\u00f3n axonal, imprescindible para que se reestablezcan las funciones perdidas despu\u00e9s de una lesi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-72199-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" loop autoplay preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Video4.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Video4.mp4\">https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Video4.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>Los autores del trabajo, en el que tambi\u00e9n ha participado el Grupo de Nanobioingenier\u00eda del IBEC, liderado por Josep Samitier, el director del Instituto, subrayan la posible utilizaci\u00f3n de la metodolog\u00eda para modelizar el estudio de otras enfermedades del sistema nervioso como la esclerosis lateral amiotr\u00f3fica (ELA), cuyo origen se relaciona con la muerte de motoneuronas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLa plataforma que hemos dise\u00f1ado nos permite poner en un mismo dispositivo dos tipos de c\u00e9lulas distintas -las neuronales y las musculares- y modular su actividad mediante est\u00edmulos de luz\u201d, apunta del R\u00edo, que adem\u00e1s de ser uno de los investigadores principales del IBEC es catedr\u00e1tico del Departamento de Biolog\u00eda Celular, Fisiolog\u00eda e Inmunolog\u00eda de la Universidad de Barcelona (UB) y miembro del Instituto de Neurociencia de la UB (UBNeuro) y del Centro de Investigaci\u00f3n Biom\u00e9dica en Red sobre Enfermedades Neurodegenerativas (CIBERNED).<\/p>\n<p>Por \u00faltimo, el catedr\u00e1tico destaca que mediante el uso de este tipo de plataformas se reduce en gran medida la necesidad de experimentar con animales, pues este tipo de experimentaci\u00f3n se sustituye por l\u00edneas celulares a la hora de llevar a cabo los experimentos.
