Doudna, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/lists\/nobel-prize-awarded-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">la sexta y la s\u00e9ptima mujeres en recibir el premio de qu\u00edmica<\/a>, han sido pioneras en los primeros trabajos sobre Crispr-Cas9, una especie de tijeras gen\u00e9ticas que permite a los investigadores alterar el ADN de los animales, plantas y microorganismos con una alta precisi\u00f3n extrema. Poco despu\u00e9s de que Emmanuelle Charpentier y Jennifer Doudna publicasen su descubrimiento de las tijeras gen\u00e9ticas CRISPR\/Cas9 en 2012, varios grupos de investigaci\u00f3n han demostrado que esta herramienta puede usarse para modificar el genoma en c\u00e9lulas en ratones y humanos, lo que lleva a un desarrollo explosivo que podr\u00eda llevar las ciencias de la vida a una nueva \u00e9poca y, en muchos sentidos, para el mayor beneficio de la humanidad.<\/p>\n<p>En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, esta tecnolog\u00eda ha sido usada en numerosas aplicaciones cient\u00edficas para la salud, desde el desarrollo de tratamientos en curso para afecciones como la <a href=\"https:\/\/choice.npr.org\/index.html?origin=https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2020\/06\/23\/877543610\/a-year-in-1st-patient-to-get-gene-editing-for-sickle-cell-disease-is-thriving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">enfermedad de c\u00e9lulas falciformes<\/a> o la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-00655-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ceguera hereditaria<\/a>. Las tijeras gen\u00e9ticas tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1n contribuyendo a nuevas inmunoterapias para el c\u00e1ncer y se est\u00e1n realizando ensayos para hacer realidad un sue\u00f1o : curar enfermedades hereditarias. Los investigadores ya est\u00e1n realizando estudios cl\u00ednicos para investigar c\u00f3mo pueden usar el CRISPR\/Cas9 para tratar enfermedades de la sangre como anemia de c\u00e9lulas falciformes y la beta talasemia, as\u00ed como enfermedades oculares hereditarias. <a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/?s=crispr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Investigadores de IBEC<\/a> tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1n usando esta tecnolog\u00eda de bioingenier\u00eda para estudiar enfermedades y posibles soluciones para la salud.<\/p>\n<p>Investigadores de todo el mundo tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1n desarrollando m\u00e9todos para la reparaci\u00f3n de genes en \u00f3rganos como el cerebro y los m\u00fasculos. Los experimentos en animales han mostrado que especialmente los virus dise\u00f1ados pueden enviar las tijeras gen\u00e9ticas a las c\u00e9lulas deseadas, tratando modelos de enfermedades hereditarias devastadoras como la distrofia muscular, la atrofia muscular espinal y la enfermedad de Huntington.
