Este m\u00e9todo de diagn\u00f3stico es \u00fatil precisamente porque la formaci\u00f3n de tumores est\u00e1 asociada al endurecimiento del tejido. Sin embargo, hasta ahora se desconoc\u00eda c\u00f3mo las c\u00e9lulas son capaces de detectar la rigidez del tejido, y porque reaccionan de forma diferente en condiciones sanas o tumorales.<\/p>\n<p>Investigadores del Instituto de Bioingenier\u00eda de Catalu\u00f1a (IBEC), junto con sus colaboradores del Barts Cancer Institute de la Queen Mary University (Londres), han demostrado como las mol\u00e9culas que las c\u00e9lulas utilizan para adherirse a su entorno, llamadas integrinas, permiten a las c\u00e9lulas detectar y adaptarse a la rigidez del tejido.<\/p>\n<p>Este es un proyecto que impulsa la Obra Social \u201cla Caixa\u201d en el campo de la investigaci\u00f3n de excelencia de valoraci\u00f3n y transferencia de conocimiento.<\/p>\n<p><strong> El papel de las integrinas<\/strong><br \/>\n\u00abHemos observado que en c\u00e9lulas de mama sanas, las propiedades adhesivas de las integrinas hacen que las c\u00e9lulas reduzcan la fuerza que aplican a su entorno si \u00e9ste es m\u00e1s r\u00edgido de lo normal\u00bb dice Pere Roca- Cusachs, investigador principal del IBEC y profesor lector de la Universidad de Barcelona, que ha liderado el estudio. \u00abDado que una reducci\u00f3n de fuerzas tambi\u00e9n reduce la rigidez del tejido, este mecanismo puede prevenir el endurecimiento del tejido\u00bb.<br \/>\nPor otra parte, las c\u00e9lulas cancer\u00edgenas de mama expresan un tipo diferente de integrinas, con unas propiedades adhesivas modificadas. Estas otras integrinas hacen que las c\u00e9lulas apliquen m\u00e1s fuerza a medida que la rigidez del tejido aumenta, creando un mecanismo de retroalimentaci\u00f3n que finalmente podr\u00eda conducir a la formaci\u00f3n de los n\u00f3dulos duros caracter\u00edsticos de los tumores de mama.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Evitar el endurecimiento de los tejidos, una posible herramienta para combatir el c\u00e1ncer <\/strong><br \/>\n\u00abNuestro estudio es el primero que describe un mecanismo molecular de detecci\u00f3n de la rigidez del tejido, y adem\u00e1s lo demostramos en c\u00e9lulas humanas sanas y cancer\u00edgenas\u00bb, dice Pere Roca-Cusachs. \u00abDe hecho, lo m\u00e1s fascinante es que el endurecimiento anormal del tejido se presenta no s\u00f3lo en c\u00e1ncer de mama, sino tambi\u00e9n en muchos otros tipos de c\u00e1ncer que tambi\u00e9n tienen alteraciones en los niveles de varias integrinas.
