Mientras que las larvas de la especie de polillas <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Galleria mellonella<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> son conocidas por da\u00f1ar las colmenas, tambi\u00e9n han sido objeto de mucha investigaci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica en las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas, particularmente por su utilidad como modelos invertebrados para <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">detectar los<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> mecanismos <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">detr\u00e1s de algunas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> enfermedades. Para ponerlo en perspectiva, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">el punto<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> al final de esta frase es de aproximadamente 1.000.000 de nan\u00f3metros de ancho. Estas peque\u00f1as part\u00edculas tienen una serie de propiedades que les permiten mejorar <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">muchos objetos<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> cotidianos. Hasta hoy, nos han dado gafas a prueba de rozaduras, pinturas resistentes a las grietas, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">telas \u201cantimanchas\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> y m\u00e1s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. E<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> incluso se est\u00e1n utilizando en dispositivos<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> y tratamientos<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> m\u00e9dicos.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Las nanopart\u00edculas de plata, oro y selenio, probadas en este estudio, son tres tipos <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">de compuestos <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">que se utilizan ampliamente en <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">numerosos<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> campos industriales y biom\u00e9dicos. Mientras que las nanopart\u00edculas de plata se <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">emplean<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> en muchos productos de consumo, como textiles y dispositivos m\u00e9dicos, sus hom\u00f3logos de oro han demostrado ser eficaces en la administraci\u00f3n de f\u00e1rmacos y en la terapia de la artritis y el c\u00e1ncer. Finalmente, se ha demostrado que las nanopart\u00edculas de selenio mejoran las funciones inmunes, cognitivas y reproductivas.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sin embargo, a pesar de sus numerosos beneficios, las nanopart\u00edculas tambi\u00e9n pueden ser t\u00f3xicas si superan determinadas concentraciones. Se trata de una cuesti\u00f3n <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">esencial<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, especialmente cuando tienen que ser <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">emplearse en<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> paciente<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Pruebas m\u00e1s \u00e9ticas con la larva <em>G. mellonella<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La toxicidad de las nanopart\u00edculas se comprueba primero <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in vitro<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> en l\u00edneas celulares y despu\u00e9s <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in vivo<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> en ratones, una pr\u00e1ctica que es a la vez muy cara y \u00e9ticamente controvertida. Los autores de este estudio proponen el uso de larvas de <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">G. mellonella<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, tambi\u00e9n conocidas como gusanos de cera, como un puente entre estos dos modelos.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Los investigadores inyectaron a las larvas diferentes concentraciones de nanopart\u00edculas. Mediante la <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">detecci\u00f3n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> de la dosis letal media, la proliferaci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas inmunes, la distribuci\u00f3n de nanopart\u00edculas <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">en<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> el organismo, los cambios de comportamiento y los cambios anat\u00f3micos a nivel microsc\u00f3pico, encontraron que la toxicidad de las tres sustancias estaba estrechamente alineada con los resultados <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">obtenidos en<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> estudios <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">con ratones<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Adem\u00e1s, hallaron que l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as nanopart\u00edculas de selenio son, con diferencia, las m\u00e1s t\u00f3xicas de las tres, seguidas de las de plata y las de oro.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Un par\u00e1metro <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">analizado<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> por los investigadores <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fue<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> el n\u00famero de hemocitos (c\u00e9lulas inmunes invertebradas) producidos por las larvas <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">como<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> respuesta a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nte las<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> diferentes concentraciones de nanopart\u00edculas. Con este modelo de invertebrados, los investigadores podr\u00e1n estudiar un gran n\u00famero de muestras simult\u00e1neamente y, por lo tanto, hacer mejores predicciones sobre sus efectos t\u00f3xicos en los ratones.
