The Molecular Bionics group at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) led by Prof. Giuseppe Battaglia at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is a research group whose general objective is to design and characterize bionic units that mimic specific biological functions and/or introduce operations that do not exist in Nature.

We are looking for a Senior Laboratory Technician to support the biology research lines of the team, and to manage the lab activities.
The successful candidate will ensure that the laboratory operates smoothly, covering a wide array of duties, both scientific and administrative. Examples are: taking care of the safety of the lab, providing technical and scientific support to the group members, organizing the lab data bases and group meetings, training students and researchers, acting as a transversal link within the research group and the administration departments of IBEC to collaborate with projects, personnel and financial managing.
Open mindedness, pro-activity and  prior experience in research and laboratory managing are essential requirements for this position.
Main tasks and responsibilities / The successful candidate will develop research involving: 
  • Biological laboratory procedures based on his/her project or following the specifications provided by the researchers. This includes: cell culture, molecular biology and protein expression characterization experiments (e.g. immunostaining and microscopy, cell cytometry, western blot) .
  • Support to researchers’ development of experimental configurations, with the set up of processes, protocols, specific equipment for the activity of the Research Group.
  • Provide quality answers on time so that the research group can carry out the processes and projects successfully.
  • Coordinate and ensure that researchers are updated in standard laboratory techniques and processes, and take care of their technical training.
  • Maintenance of technical infrastructures related to the biology lab, including regular lab and instruments cleaning, reporting machine or equipment failure.
  • Keep track over the respect of the safety laboratory procedures and report potential infringement of the safety rules.
  • Manage the laboratory daily routine and keep control over the correct storing of chemical and reagents.
  • Liaise with external laboratory suppliers to manage purchasing for the group.
  • Schedule Staff activities and manage the booking of the equipment.
  • Take care of administrative aspects of the research group, interacting with the administrative departments of the institute to manage finance, personnel, and projects.
Requirements for candidates: 
  • PhD in Biology / Biotechnology / Biomedicine or related disciplines.
  • Previous experience as Laboratory technician (at least 2 years).
  • Multidisciplinary qualifications and experience with different laboratory techniques and instruments (e.g. cell culture, molecular biology, microscopy, cytometry, spectrophotometry)
  • Competencies and skills: Communication, Teamwork, Proactivity, Commitment, Collegiality, Integrity, Critical and Analytical thinking, managing and organization skills.
  • English: Proficiency Level

  • Working conditions: Full time 1-year contract. Very competitive salary/ Salary will be commensurate with academic level and experience.
