Science Journalism
Astrid Viciano, IBEC
We are continuously exposed to all sorts of information on science and health, with a sharp increase during the past years of the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, the role of science writers in communicating science to the general public is becoming increasingly important. With scientific knowledge expanding at a tremendous pace, writers who are able to understand scientific studies and scientists’ claims and translate their work for the general public are in high demand.
How do science journalists choose the topics they write about? How to they select the experts to speak with? And what career paths can lead into science journalism? Looking at concrete examples from the German and European media landscape, the underlying rules of science journalism will be explained.
Dr. Astrid Viciano has been working as a science journalistfor German national media such as Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Zeit, Spiegel, and GEO for more than 20 years.
She has been working in a variety of European cross-border teams, focusing on in-depth investigative science reporting. From 2012 until 2016, she worked as a freelance reporter from Paris, from 2009 and 2011 she worked from Los Angeles. She has published articles in German, English, Dutch and Spanish.
