Introduction to the vacant position:

The Smart Nano-Bio-Devices Group is looking for a PhD student to develop his/her PhD thesis project on the development of self-propelled nanomotors for biomedical applications. The contract will be within the framework of the ERC project of i-NanoSwarms which aims at studying the collective behavior of active nanoparticles, their cooperative motion, guidance through chemotaxis, and their interactions with biological systems.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Synthesis, characterization, and functionalization of inorganic (e.g., mesoporous NPs) /organic enzyme-functionalized (e.g., lipid-based, hydrogels) nanocarrier that are fully biocompatible and biodegradable.
  • Study of functionalization and drug loading/release capabilities of nanoparticles for the development of precision and personalized nanobots.
  • Characterization of nanoparticles.

Requirements for candidates:

Essential:
• BS in chemistry or similar.
• MSc in chemistry, nanotechnology or similar.
• High motivation for translational and multidisciplinary research.
• Experience with inorganic nanoparticle synthesis (at least one): metal NPs, silica NPs and/or metal oxide NPs.
• Experience with organic nanoparticles (at least one): polymeric NPs, liposomes and/or self-assembled NPs.
• Functionalization of NPs: Basic knowledge on surface modification and applied chemistry.
• Characterization of NPs: dynamic light scattering and zeta potential, spectroscopy (UV-Vis, FTIR, Raman, NMR).
• Basic knowledge of techniques in organic synthesis: RMN, FTIR, chromatography, ultra centrifugation, rotary evaporator.
• Competencies and skills: Communication, Teamwork, Proactivity, Commitment, Collegiality, Integrity, Critical and Analytical thinking.
• High level of English.

Advantageous:
• Experience in nanomotors or active particles.
• Demonstrable experience and expertise on wet chemical methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles.
• Experience in advance microscopy characterization (TEM, SEM, AFM)

We Offer:

• Number of available positions: 1
• Starting date: September 1st 2023
• Working conditions:
– Three-year full-time contract.
• Measures to reconcile work and family life (maternity and paternity leave, flexible schedule working hours, 23 working days of paid holidays, 9 leave days for personal matters, among others).
