Introduction to the vacant position:
The Nanobioengineering Group is looking for PhD student to develop her/his PhD thesis project on the development of novel 3D human models-on-a-chip of healthy and compromised brains. The contract will be within the framework of AlterNED (Proyectos en Líneas Estratégicas) and eBRAIN (Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento) with the objective of drug screening and neurotoxicity assessment in amyloidosis-based disease applications including Alzheimer disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington disease or posttraumatic stress disorder. The candidate will be integrated into a translational and multidisciplinary team with extensive experience in training researchers at the postdoctoral, predoctoral and postgraduate level. The research group, located at IBEC, is in close contact with International and National teams, belonging to CIBER-BBN (Carlos III Health Institute).
Main tasks and responsibilities:
- Microfabrication of the brain-on-a-chip device with integrated electrodes for in situ monitoring.
- Manipulate hydrogels and other synthetic and natural matrices.
- 3D-bioprinting.
- Cell culture of primary cells and iPSCs derived from patients.
- Cell differentiation.
- Produce and analyze functional data of neuronal activity from calcium imaging en electric recordings in vitro.
- Advanced imaging techniques to track transport through endothelial barriers.
- Molecular biology and cell characterization techniques (RT-PCR, western blot, Immunofluorescence, and flow cytometry among others).
- Data analysis.
Requirements for candidates:
Essential:
- BSc and MSc in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, biomedicine, nanotechnology or related fields.
- Previous experience in cell culture and basic molecular biology techniques.
- Experience in imaging techniques (e.g., confocal microcopy or life imaging).
- Competencies and skills: Communication, Teamwork and collaboration, Commitment, Proactivity, Integrity, Critical and Analytical thinking.
- High level of English
Advantageous:
- Previous experience in Neurobiology related techniques (e.g., primary neuronal or glial cultures)
- Experience in microfabrication techniques/protocols and working in cleanroom environments will be considered a plus.
