Guest Residence for Journalists with a Focus on Science and Health Communication
The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), an international research center located in Barcelona, offers a guest residence for a science journalist through the Severo Ochoa Programme of Excellence. The objectives of the programme are to support high-quality journalism in the fields of Science and Health, to promote the public dissemination of Biomedical Engineering, and to strengthen the dialogue between journalists and scientists. At the same time, the program offers scholars at IBEC the opportunity to know the work of international science journalists and to find ways of enhancing the public communication of their research.
During your visit, you will have the opportunity to get a deeper insight into Bioengineering, a discipline merging life sciences and engineering for health, and to perform a journalistic research project in one or more IBEC’s research groups. Moreover, you will be able to attend the colloquia and workshops of the various research groups and the whole institution. During your residency, you will be supported and mentored by an IBEC Group Leader and the Head of Communications.
We offer:
- A guest residence between 6 weeks and 3 months at IBEC. The duration and dates of the residency are arranged on an individual basis.
- A stipend of €3000 per month.
- Travel costs for economy-class airfare, or equivalent, to/from Barcelona, Spain.
- IBEC Journalists in Residence are free to pursue their own journalistic research in the fields of bioengineering, science and health.
- Desk space and access to scientific literature at IBEC.
- To visit IBEC labs and interact with researchers from the fields of future medicine, regenerative therapies or active ageing, on any research topic performed at IBEC such as nanomedicine, nanorobotics, cellular and tissue engineering, organoids or ICT for health. - Full access to colloquia, workshops and international conferences organised by IBEC.
We ask for:
- To carry up two workshops about science journalism at IBEC.
- To carry up journalistic investigative work in the fields of bioengineering, science and health.
IBEC welcomes applications from national and international experienced staff and freelance reporters working in printed, radio, podcast and/or online journalism and reporting regularly on science and health topics.
Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a reference from the applicant’s editor-in-chief (for staff journalists) or central employer, three recent samples of your work, a short outline (max. half a page) of your proposed research during your stay at the Institute, and details of your preferred dates (within the year 2022).
