Researcher in Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis and Alzheimer’s diseases assessment.(PPCC- ADGUT_2)

  1. Introduction to the position:

EURECAT Omic Sciences Unit research group is looking for a Researcher Assistant in epigenetics to work on the role of epigenomic regulatory pathways in the gut-brain on the characterization and assessment of Alzheimer’s disease. Moreover, the selected individual will have the duty of investigating how dysbiosis and other extrinsic factors alter gene expression, primarily via epigenomic regulatory mechanisms. This process will be driven by next-generation multi-omics methods and bioinformatics.

The contract will be within the framework of the “Desarrollo de modelos personalizados para el estudio del eje microbiota-intestino-cerebro en la progresión de trastornos cognitivos asociados a la enfermedad de Alzheimer (ADGUT)” project prioritized by the IBEC under the “Plan Complementario de Biotecnología aplicada a la Salud” (Biotechnology Applied to Health).

This Plan Complementario is co-financed by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and the Generalitat de Catalunya, with funds from the European Union NextGenerationEU (PRTR-C17.I1)

2.Main duties and responsibilities:

Under the direction of Núria Canela, the applicant will carry out the following research activities:

  • Explore how gut-microbial products can affect chromatin plasticity on the host brain.
    • Investigate the role of epigenetic mechanisms in shaping brain and behaviour, using personalized models for cognitive disorders associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
    • Work closely with the interdisciplinary team to incorporate discoveries related to the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis into the overall project framework, ensuring a thorough comprehension of the microbiota’s impact on cognitive health.

The selected candidate will be located at Omic Sciences Unit facilities located in Reus.

  1. Requirements for candidates


  • MD or Ph.D. in Biology, Biochemistry, Health Science, or a related field
    • Experience in bioinformatics
    • Expertise on genomic methods, such as quantitative PCR (qPCR), Next Generation Sequencing, etc.
    • Competencies and skills: Communication, Teamwork and collaboration, Commitment, Proactivity, Integrity, Critical and Analytical thinking
    • High level of English


  • Prior experience in other omics data analysis, like proteomics, metabolomics,…
