Introduction to the vacant position:
We are a multidisciplinary group whose general objective is to design and characterize bionic units that mimic specific biological functions and introduce operations that do not exist in Nature. We apply a constructionist approach where we mimic biological complexity in design principles to produce functional units from simple building blocks and their interactions. We called this Molecular Bionics. Such an effort is multidisciplinary and involves inputs from Chemistry, Physics, and Cell and Molecular Biology. Please, visit our external web site for more information: https://www.molecularbionics.org.
Microscopy characterization of our materials is one of our main research focuses. For this, we are setting up the Centre for Liquid Phase Electron Microscopy Imaging at Barcelona. This will be equipped with state-of-the-art electron microscopy facilities to image liquid samples with sub-nanometer spatial and temporal resolution of milliseconds.
We are looking for a Physical Sciences expert to work on the development of novel 3D imaging modality of nanoparticles, macromolecules and biological structures in water.
Main tasks and responsibilities:
-
Investigate dynamic processes and structural characteristics of biological systems and organic materials with Liquid Phase Transmission/Scanning Electron Microscopy.
-
Develop and stablish novel image analysis methods for EM characterisation of soft nanomaterials and biological systems.
-
Support, supervise and train other members of the group on the use of TEM and associated projects on the area of the candidate’s expertise.
Requirements for candidates:
-
Degree, Master and PhD in Physical Sciences.
-
Demonstrated experience in research in Soft Matter Organic Systems.
-
In depth knowledge of imaging science including transmission electron microscopy.
-
Advanced knowledge and proven experience on Liquid Transmission and Scanning Electron microscopy instrumentation and technique.
-
Advanced knowledge in image analysis.
-
Experience in working at the life science interface.
-
Experience in training, supervision and guidance of researchers on the use of TEM operation, data interpretation and sample preparation.
-
Competencies and skills: Communication, Teamwork, Proactivity, Commitment, Collegiality, Integrity, Critical and Analytical thinking.
