Postdoc Melba Navarro and PhD student Tiziano Serra, both from the Bio/non-bio interactions for regenerative medicine group, created the winning electron microscope image, which they they named ‘Biowaffle’, by looking at a polylactic scaffold made by a rapid prototyping machine. “These scaffolds are used in bone tissue engineering and are made with a layer-by-layer deposit of polymer, a bit like cooking a waffle at the microscale,” explains Melba.

The image, which was submitted to the Image of the Month contest back in February, got 41% of the votes for the best of all submissions for 2010 in the final survey held at the beginning of December. IBEC Director Josep Planell presented Melba and Tiziano with their prizes, a video camera each, during the short ceremony at IBEC.

Stop press! 22 December: Hot on the heels of their Image of the Year success, another picture from Melba and Tiziano, ‘Biotunnel’, has won the Parc Científic Barcelona’s Fotorecerca’10 competition. The scanning electron microscope photo of a stent – a cylindical device for use in coronary arteries – won over 40 other hopefuls submitted by the companies, institutes, technological platforms and other organisations in the PCB. On 23 December Melba and Tiziano will receive their prize of a digital camera at the PCB Christmas drink at 12:30.
