A study led by IBEC researchers has made it possible to reproduce the blood-brain barrier using the organ-on-a-chip (OoC) platform with the ultimate goal of being able to study the permeability of this membrane to different Alzheimer’s drugs. This type of chip will also make it possible to screen for the most effective drugs, avoiding the use of animals and in a faster and cheaper way. In addition, the device could be adapted to different types of studies involving the pathology of the human brain, as is the case for many neurodegenerative diseases, where the integrity of the blood-brain barrier is often compromised. Eventually, work will be done to incorporate patient-derived cells on the chip to enable personalised studies.
