The interdisciplinarity of IBEC showcased in the opinion section of Nature Physics

Teresa Sanchis and Xavier Trepat, members of IBEC, have authored opinion pieces in the ‘World View’ section of Nature Physics. Both articles underscore IBEC’s dedication to scientific excellence, the promotion of diversity, and the cultivation of an environment conducive to collaboration. They also highlight the relevant role of IBEC at the international level in multidisciplinary research.

Two IBEC members, Teresa Sanchis, Head of the Strategic Initiatives Unit, and Xavier Trepat, Principal Investigator of  the integrative cell and tissue dynamics group, have contributed opinion articles to the prestigious scientific journal Nature Physics. Their pieces are featured in the ‘World View’ section, Nature’s weekly rapid response opinion column that offers senior figures and commentators a platform to discuss events that affect the world’s scientific community. It covers everything from the interaction between science and policy and the media to issues discussed among bench scientists and funders.

In her article, “Strategies for multidisciplinary research,” Sanchis explores the significance of investing in fostering a culture of collaboration to help break down barriers between disciplines. The piece underscores key strategies employed by IBEC to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, encompassing innovative laboratory design, and mentoring and coaching programs designed to promote diversity and inclusion.

On the other hand, Trepat and his collaborator, Ricard Alert, in “How to bridge the gap between theory and experiments in biological physics“, share their experience in collaborating between theoretical and experimental scientists to develop a revolutionary theory on active wetting in living tissues. They highlight the challenges and lessons learned in interdisciplinary collaboration, underlining the importance of creating a common language and culture.

Both articles highlight IBEC’s commitment to scientific excellence, fostering diversity and creating an environment conducive to collaboration. They also highlight the relevant role of IBEC at the international level in multidisciplinary research.
