The latest developments in nanotechnology, biotechnology and medicine were presented at the NanoBio&Med 2024 International Conference, held this week at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) from 5 to 7 November. This is an annual event designed to establish new collaborations and promote innovative projects in the scientific-industrial sector.
The event, now in its twelfth year, was organised by the PHANTOMS Foundation in collaboration with the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Spanish Nanomedicine Platform (Nanomed Spain), coordinated by IBEC, and has become an annual event to establish new collaborations and promote innovative projects in the scientific-industrial sector.
The conference focused on emerging and future trends in nanotechnology, biotechnology and medicine. Industry experts, academics and institutional representatives participated in in-depth discussions on recent advances, challenges and progress in these interdisciplinary fields.
The conference promoted a constructive dialogue between business and public leaders, with a particular focus on technologies and applications in the biomedical sector.
The event, which was opened by Josep Samitier, Director of IBEC and Scientific Coordinator of Nanomed Spain, also featured presentations by Giuseppe Battaglia, ICREA Research Professor and Principal Investigator of IBEC’s Molecular Bionics Group, who focused on his work in supramolecular drug design; Samuel Sánchez, ICREA Research Professor and Principal Investigator of IBEC’s Smart Nano-bio-devices group, who presented his work on biocompatible chemical robots and their applications in biomedicine; Xavier Rovira Clapé, Principal Investigator of the Spatial Biotechnology group, who spoke about multiplexed and high-resolution protein imaging; Juan Fraire, senior researcher in IBEC’s Smart Nano-bio-devices group, talked about hotoporation as a versatile tool against cancer; and Óscar Castaño, professor at the University of Barcelona and researcher in IBEC’s Biomaterials for Regenerative Therapies group, talked about nanotools for modelling 3D microenvironments in tissue engineering.
Inés Macias Tarrio and Gema Quiñonero López, PhD students from IBEC’s Smart Nano-bio-devices and Nanobioengineering groups respectively, also participated in the parallel sessions.
The event is organised by the PHANTONS Foundation, IBEC, the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) and the Nanomed Spain Platform, which brings together nearly 200 organisations, including hospitals, research centres, companies, technology centres and observers.
The success of NanoBio&Med 2024 has once again laid the foundations for next year’s edition, NanoBio&Med 2025, which will also take place in November and will be the epicentre for a complete overview of the state of the art in nanobiotechnology and nanomedicine, as well as the latest research and innovative results.
