Introduction to the vacant position:
We are looking for a Biomedical Data Engineer specialized in Biomedical Data Engineering / Bioinformatics to join IBEC in the frame of the project “Plataforma ISCIII Biomodelos y Biobancos” (PTC223/00002) within the call Plataformas ISCIII de apoyo a la I+D+I en Biomedicina y Ciencias de la Salud. The project is supported by the INSTITUTO DE SALUD CARLOS III.
Main tasks and responsibilities:
Biomedical Data Engineer to oversee and manage the activities and services within the National Platform of Biomodels and Biobanks.
The extent of duties include:
– Administration and maintenance of the IT infrastructure supporting the Platform.
– Support in the maintenance, and improvement of the management application of the Plataforma ISCIII Biomodelos y Biobancos, developed in Symfony (PHP) and MySQL.
– Support in the integration, maintenance, and evolution of the Platform’s BackOffice and its core functionalities, including the Workspace.
– Contribution to the upload, validation, and review of data in the platform’s biobank and biomodel catalogs.
– Support and collaboration with the external provider responsible for developing and maintaining processes for the transformation of catalogs into the OMOP Common Data Model (CDM), including contributions to semantic mapping and technical validation tasks.
– Support in the technical management of the BBMRI-ERIC Directory and the evolution of the Platform’s Federated Data System.
– Support in updating and maintaining the Platform’s official website, as well as the website for the ISCIII Platforms Annual Conference.
– Support the coordination in the preparation and maintenance of datasets, technical documentation, and digital tools, as well as provide assistance in technical meetings and collaborative tasks related to data systems and platforms.
– Guarantee data interoperability and quality according to international standards (OMOP, HL7 FHIR, SNOMED CT, LOINC, etc.).
– Participate in the technical design of new functionalities and system improvements in collaboration with the development team and scientific coordination.
Requirements for candidates:
- PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or related fields.
- Experience of min 1-2 years as a Biomedical Data Engineer.
- Experience in the context of biobanks and bioinformatics.
- Experience in harmonization and transformation of biomedical data in structured environments, with special emphasis on the OMOP CDM data model.
- Strong programming skills, particularly in Python and R, and advanced experience with relational databases (preferably MySQL).
- Knowledge and experience working with web frameworks, particularly Symfony (PHP), and web application management systems (BackOffice, control panels, Workspaces).
- Ability to integrate into pre-existing technological environments with established business logic and data structures.
- Familiarity with biomedical data visualization techniques.
- Experience in data curation, loading, and reviewing of biomedical databases.
- Full command in English.
- Competencies: communication, team working, proactivity and reactivity, and attention to detail
- Previous experience in European projects (e.g., BBMRI-ERIC, ELIXIR, EOSC) will be highly valued.
