Los centros Severo Ochoa se reúnen en La Palma
El foro 100XCIENCIA “Comunicando la ciencia de frontera” tuvo lugar la semana pasada en Santa Cruz de La Palma. El director del IBEC, Josep Samitier, fue uno de los veinte directores que presentó su Centro de Excelencia Severo Ochoa a la asamblea de comunicadores científicos y periodistas, que incluía a Kenneth Chang del New York Times.
El evento, de tres días de duración, también incluyó mesas redondas durante las cuales los directores, los periodistas y otros profesionales, incluyendo representantes de la Comisión Europea, discutieron sobre temas como las políticas científicas, la ciencia en los medios y el impacto de las actividades de divulgación.

Possible new treatment for bladder cancer using a mycobacterium
Collaborators at the UAB and IBEC have found a mycobacterium that is more effective in treating superficial bladder cancer and does not cause infections, unlike those used up to now.
Mycobacteria are the only bacteria used in cancer treatment. The administration of the bacterium Mycobacterium bovis (BCG) is the current treatment for superficial bladder cancer, and is inserted directly into the bladder through a catheter. BCG prevents new tumours from appearing, but despite its efficacy it has many adverse side effects, the most serious being BCG infections that need to be treated with antituberculous drugs.
