Descubierto un nuevo mecanismo que podría mejorar las lesiones medulares

Un estudio liderado por investigadores del IBEC y el Imperial College de Londres identifica un mecanismo que regula la capacidad regenerativa en lesiones del sistema nervioso central. Los expertos han podido demostrar, por primera vez, cómo la inhibición genética o farmacológica de la nueva diana terapéutica podría superar la insuficiencia regenerativa después de una lesión medular.

¿Me recuperare de esta lesión? Responder a esta pregunta que muchos pacientes se plantean después de sufrir una caída o cualquier tipo de accidente o enfermedad, es aún un reto para la medicina. Y es que, los mecanismos moleculares que discriminan entre el éxito y el fracaso regenerativo siguen siendo un misterio para la ciencia. A pesar de que las lesiones en el sistema nervioso periférico pueden ser parcialmente reversibles, las lesiones del sistema nervioso central no pueden regenerarse de la misma manera. Esta falta de capacidad regenerativa es la principal responsable de los déficits funcionales, por ejemplo, después de una la lesión medular.
