IBEC principal investigator Santiago Marco has been named IEEE Fellow, the highest honour awarded by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The award highlights Marco’s contributions to signal processing and machine learning in chemical sensors.

Dr Santiago Marco, principal investigator at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and professor at the University of Barcelona (UB), has been named IEEE Fellow, the highest honour awarded by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This recognition, awarded to less than 0.1% of the organisation’s members each year, highlights his contributions to signal processing and machine learning in chemical sensing. His work, together with the Signal and Information Processing for Sensor Systems group he leads at IBEC, has been instrumental in incorporating machine learning into low-cost chemical sensor array systems to improve their chemical selectivity, temporal stability and reduce calibration costs. These systems have applications in volatile biomarker detection, environmental monitoring and food flavour analysis, among others.
Dr Marco was nominated to the IEEE Sensor Council by Dr Radislav Potyrailo from General Electric Research (USA) in recognition of his pioneering work in developing advanced algorithms for data analysis in chemical sensors.
About IEEE
