IBEC joins the STEAM Alliance to promote female talent in science and technology

By joining this initiative, the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is strengthening its commitment to gender equality and to encouraging girls and young women to pursue STEAM careers, thereby helping to eliminate stereotypes and reduce the gender gap in science and technology.

The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) has joined the STEAM Alliance for Female Talent, a Spanish Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sport initiative that promotes careers in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) among girls and young women, and aims to reduce the gender gap in these fields.

“Our membership of the STEAM Alliance is a clear statement of our commitment to equal opportunities and to inspiring new generations. We want girls and young women to see scientific and technological disciplines as areas in which they can flourish and take on leadership roles,” says Josep Samitier, IBEC’s director.

Since its establishment in 2022, over 150 organisations have joined this collaborative platform, uniting administrations, companies, universities, social organisations, and the media to generate synergies and promote projects that foster interest in STEAM subjects. The accession protocol was signed today at a ceremony held at the Palacio de Zurbano in Madrid and presided over by the Secretary of State for Education, Abelardo de la Rosa, and the Secretary General for Vocational Training, Esther Monterrubio.

Leading institutions such as Amazon Spain, Google Spain and Portugal, AstraZeneca, the Margarita Salas Foundation and Accem have also joined today, reinforcing the collaborative and multi-sectoral dimension of the initiative.

To become part of the Alliance, entities had to submit a project to promote STEAM vocations among girls and adolescents, which underwent a rigorous evaluation process. This commitment aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, particularly SDGs 4 (quality education) and 5 (gender equality).

By joining the Alliance, IBEC reaffirms its commitment to contributing to a more inclusive education system and a society in which girls and young women can fulfil their potential in STEAM subjects.
