IBEC receives Severo Ochoa Excellence Award

IBEC Director Josep Samitier expressed his gratitude for the award and said: “The award is a huge milestone in the evolution and consolidation of IBEC, and the confirmation of a success story that started only a few years ago, when research groups from the UPC and UB joined their efforts in the field of bioengineering.

“We are strongly committed to continuously building on our research in our application areas of Bioengineering for Active Ageing, Bioengineering for Regenerative Therapies and Bioengineering for Future Medicine, and their translation to the clinic and to industry. This recognition validates our new IBEC Strategy for 2014-2017, with the panel of evaluators giving the go-ahead for our plans towards future excellence.”

The awards last four years and bring a million euros each year to the winning centres, as well as strengthening research capacities, improving visibility to obtain sponsorship and boosting success rates in other competitive funding programmes. The other winning centre in the 2014 round is the Instituto de Física Corpuscular, a joint centre of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and the University of Valencia.

This is the fourth year of the Severo Ochoa awards, and with the accreditation IBEC is recognised as one of Spain’s leading research centres alongside just 19 other organisations in the country – of which IBEC is the third-youngest centre.
