The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is pleased to welcome new international students to its PhD programme. This initiative offers excellent training and research opportunities in bioengineering, as well as strong collaboration with leading hospitals and institutions.

The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) has welcomed a new cohort of students to its International PhD Programme Fellowship. This initiative is aimed at training the next generation of bioengineering experts in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment.
Funded by Severo Ochoa and other collaborating entities, the programme is distinguished by its translational focus and its structure, which is built on partnerships with healthcare institutions and research centres. In the latest call for applications, the fellowships were distributed across various modalities that reflect this commitment:
- IBEC–BST PhD Programme with the Blood and Tissue Bank Research Institute (BST).
- IBEC–Sant Joan de Déu PhD Programme with the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute (FSJD).
- IBEC–VHIR PhD Programme with the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR).
- IBEC Collaborative PhD Programme, which includes collaboration with the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS) and other prestigious institutions.
Doctorates are carried out through universities, while IBEC provides the scientific and technological environment in which the research is conducted.
“Promoting this collaborative programme is essential for advancing bioengineering that responds to the real needs of the healthcare system. Partnerships with hospitals and other centres of research excellence enable us to combine our expertise with clinical experience, providing PhD students with a more comprehensive education that is both translational and impact-oriented,” explains Cristina Arimany, IBEC Strategy Coordinator.
Welcome PhD: Connecting Talent and Experiences
On 5 March, IBEC held a meeting called ‘Welcome PhD’, which aimed to bring together all of the programme’s PhD students and encourage them to share their experiences, challenges, and expectations within the community. The day strengthened the programme’s cohesion and created spaces for connection between students conducting their research in diverse environments.
Information sessions on support services, well-being, training opportunities and mobility were also included, as well as a meeting space to reinforce the added value of a programme firmly committed to international talent and a collaborative research model.
