A drone that improves odour management in water treatment plants

IBEC researchers together with the company Depuración de Aguas del Mediterráneo (DAM) develop a drone able to simulate the olfactory system and to detect, monitor and identify the bad odours produced by the waste water treatment plants.

Olfactory drone with remotely controlled sampler for system calibration and validation.

The drone has been calibrated and validated under real operating conditions and the results obtained in this Project, SNIFFDRONE (Odor monitoring by drones for environmental purposes) will help to take rapid and precise decisions to control and reduce the bad odours generated by the waste water treatment plants (WWTP).

 

 

 

 

 

“The developed drone allows, thanks to a combination of chemical sensors and artificial intelligence, to quickly assess the intensity of the odour emitted by a waste management plant in large areas that are sometimes difficult to access. This information is relevant for the plant operators with the ultimate goal of minimizing the impact on neighbouring communities”
