Towards a treatment for myotonic dystrophy: the first 3D model with patient cells

IBEC researchers led by Javier Ramón and Juan M. Fernández develop the first three-dimensional model for myotonic dystrophy, a rare disease that currently has no cure. The model combines patient cells and bioengineering techniques and represents a major advance over the use of animals and cell cultures. This new model will help in the design of personalized and more effective treatments, and for drug testing in a much more efficient way.

The Targeted Therapeutics and Nanodevices Research group at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is looking for a Postdoctoral candidate to collaborate in a research project focused on the identification, characterization, and application of “universal” monoclonal antibodies capable of recognizing specific cell-surface receptors in a variety of species, as primary tools to then develop targeted drug delivery applications (nanoparticles and antibody-drug conjugates) for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

The contract will be within the framework of the project “CROSSTARGET: Development of new translational cross-species tools for therapeutic targeting with organ and subcellular precision”, funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades under its RETOS program.

PhD Position in the Synthetic Morphogenesis group (IBEC, TU/e)

The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) in collaboration with the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e, Eindhoven – Netherlands) are seeing an ambitious PhD Candidate to investigate the morphogenesis of living tissues from the computational perspective. The successful candidate will carry out computational research with the Synthetic Morphogenesis group under the supervision of Dr Vito Conte across both institutions at the interface between Biology, Physics, Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Sciences. This multidisciplinary doctoral research will be carried out in collaboration with Dr Jose Muñoz at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC, Barcelona – Spain) and will be part of greater efforts aiming at establishing a new Platform for the Live-Quantification of Cell and Tissue Mechanics across the IBEC and the TU/e.

This Sant Jordi comes with the first IBBI comic, the superheroine of Bioengineering

Coinciding with International Book Day and Sant Jordi, the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) launches the first IBBI comic strip, the first Bioengineering superhero. In this first adventure, IBBI will use its superpowers to generate kidney organoids. This character aims to bring closer bioengineering to the non-scientific public, in an understandable and fun way, one of the disciplines that will mark the medicine of the future.

Fighting an opportunistic bacteria and its partners in crime

Eduard Torrents and Maria del Mar Cendra, postdoctoral researcher in his laboratory, have published a review in the journal Biotechnology Advances, where they describe the way in which P. aeruginosa forms biofilms, in which it can coexist with other species of microorganisms and its negative impact on global health.
