Xavier Trepat receives the ERC Advanced Grant to lay the basis of a new generation of biological robots

The researcher at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), Xavier Trepat, has received the prestigious ERC Advanced Grant awarded by the European Research Council (ERC) worth 2.5 million euros.

Thanks to this grant the expert and his group will be able to study the mechanical properties of the epithelium in 3D and to lay the foundations for a pioneering technology called “Epifluidics”, which will allow the design of biological robots.

IBEC researchers develop a model to design precision nanomedicine

Researchers at Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) have proposed a model that gives important insights into how nanoparticles interact with cells, virus, bacteria or proteins, among others.

The findings provide a very powerful tool to design personalized nanomedicines, since allow the scientists to create nanoparticles tailor-made for each patient.

IBEC researchers contribute to an international study to regenerate infarcted hearts

Within the EU project BRAVƎ, experts at Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) combine cell therapy and bioengineering to design a biological device that recovers cardiac functionality in people with cardiovascular diseases.

Researchers at IBEC led by the ICREA Professor Núria Montserrat contribute to the EU project BRAVƎ, an initiative for cardiac regeneration that combines cell therapy and bioengineering to design a biological device capable of recovering cardiac functionality in people with coronary heart disease.

IBEC participates in an international study to stop coronavirus contagion

Researchers at the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) led by Professor ICREA Núria Montserrat are studying the role of the receptor ‘Angiotensin converting enzyme’ (ACE2), one of the pathways that the SARS-Co-V2 virus uses to enter our body.

To do this, experts use mini-kidneys, as well as other cell cultures such as cardiac organoids. The goal is to exploit these mini-organs to better understand how the virus works.

Núria Montserrat on TV talks about Covid-19

Nuria Montserrat, principal investigator of the “Pluripotency for organ regeneration” spoke today at Espejo Público about the research that her group is carrying out in collaboration with other international research groups to find a treatment to stop the virus from continuing infecting other cells, preventing the virus from replicating.

Researchers at IBEC provide new insights on how to treat chronic infections

Researchers at Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) have managed to recreate the coculture conditions and environmental requisites that would allow the simultaneous and stable growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, two major pathogens commonly found growing together in intricate biofilms in disease-affected lungs or wounds.

Most chronic infections occur due to the inherent capacity of some bacterial pathogens to grow in biofilms. Biofilm-associated infections, which have become a critical worldwide threat, have historically been treated as single-species events.

IBEC joins the BASE3D community to contribute to the future of 3D printing

The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) will contribute its extensive experience in 3D printing and bioprinting to the BASE 3D community, an entity that brings together research centers and companies from all over Catalonia with the aim of promoting R+D+i in the field of printing 3D.

The groups led by Josep Samitier, Elisabeth Engel, Núria Montserrat and Javier Ramón at IBEC are joining the BASE3D project.

The third edition of the “Crazy about Bioengineering” program is ongoing

They are crazy, yes, but about science. 24 high-school students from different schools around Catalonia participate together with the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) in the “Crazy about Science” program, promoted by Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation since 2013.

This is the third year in a row that IBEC gets involved in this initiative and, as always, the aim is to encourage scientific vocations among young students.
