The EMBL-IBEC Winter Conference comes to an end with a huge success in terms of participation

This week, the conference organised by the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) brought together a total of 200 international experts in the field of bioengineering at La Pedrera building in Barcelona.

At the opening of the event, which was led by the mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, attention was drawn to Barcelona’s consolidation as an international centre of research and knowledge.

A research team develop biotransistors able to hear small beats of live

Researchers at IBEC and ICMAB develop a flexible, cheap and biocompatible transistor platform able to record an electrocardiogram of cells and micro-tissues during long periods of time.

The platform, based on organic transistor technology (EGOFET), can also measure the effect of drugs on beating cells, as cardiomyocytes, opening the door to several applications such as implantable devices for health.

IBEC launches its Clinical Colloquia Program

As a part of IBEC’s strategy to facilitate the transfer of excellent science into health solutions for patients and hospitals, the Institute fosters relations and partnerships with clinicians and companies. Within this framework, the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia has now launched the IBEC Clinical Colloquia Program.

Thanks to the nature of the research developed in the institute, IBEC counts on an ongoing and committed relationship with hospitals, medical doctors and patients. As a result, the involved partners are able to develop joint research projects, and in other cases they are a source of information about the unmet needs in clinical practice. With the launching of this clinical colloquia IBEC wants to strengthen these collaborations and offer the opportunity to create a space for discussion between researchers and medical doctors.

IBEC counts on collaboration of medical doctors to provide input on the clinical aspects of its research, so that results are easily extended to clinical practice.

IBEC featured at the TV program “Five days at…”

The show “5 days at…” is a TV documentary series at the national television that approaches the everyday life of very diverse places: monuments, hotels, schools, sports facilities… and now was the time for the sciens environment to take over the TV. The program takes place at the Barcelona Science Park, where IBEC is headquartered.
