After a recent publication about “reprogrammable biological robots” in the PNAS magazine, several media wanted to know the opinion of Nuria Montserrat and Samuel Sánchez (both ICREA research professors and group leaders at IBEC) as experts in this field.

Núria Montserrat, investigadora principal del grupo “Pluripotencia para la regeneración de órganos” dio una inspiradora charla ayer sobre bioingeniería y regeneración de órganos, ante más de 1500 estudiantes de bachillerato. Durante su charla explicó como des de pequeña era una niña muy curiosa, quería entender como funcionaban las cosas que la rodeaban y en cómo se inspira en la naturaleza para realizar su trabajo.

First bioimplant with stem cells to regenerate the heart

The team led by Daniel Navajas, principal investigator at IBEC, together with the Blood and Tissue Bank have developed a bioimplant of stem cells of about 16 cm² that is applied directly to the heart. The bioimplant is composed of decellularised human pericardium and enriched with stem cells from umbilical cord, of great plasticity and, therefore, capable of regenerating tissues.

On the occasion of the annual meeting of the centres of excellence “Severo Ochoa and Maria de Maeztu” (SOMMa) at the 100xCiencia event, held in San Sebastián on November 22 and 23, Elisabeth Engel spoke on radio Euskadi about the intelligent devices they are developing in their laboratory. These bandages release nanoparticles containing calcium ions that are able to heal chronic lesions such as ulcers.
