ONCE visits IBEC to learn about the research in bioengineering for health
On February 15th, representatives of the National Organization of the Spanish Blind (ONCE) visited the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) to learn, first-hand and among others, about the innovative research work of Professor Pau Gorostiza’s Group in regenerative therapies of vision.

BIST-FBA Fellow at IBEC, Dr. James Eills, is part of an international team that has received the Erwin Schrödinger Prize. Eills, current Postdoc at the Group of Irene Marco at IBEC, contributed in Germany to a technique that amplifies magnetic resonance signals.
IBEC renews the accreditation ‘HR Excellence in Research’ from the European Commission
IBEC has been awarded for the second time the ‘Human Resources Excellence in Research’ from the European Commission, in recognition of its commitment to continuously improving its HR policies. With multiple actions in line with The European Charter of Researchers and The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (Charter and Code), IBEC renews the logo for the next three years.
Unique resonance technology in Spain to study cellular metabolism, hosted by IBEC
A Dynamic Nuclear Polarisation (DNP) Polariser for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) has been recently installed at IBEC, being the only one in operation in Spain, and among the few ones existing in Europe. This equipment can improve up to 10000 folds the signal compared to a conventional NMR procedure and allows for the study of cellular metabolism in real time.
Nanomedicine seeks solutions against rare diseases
Despite its importance in the fight against pandemics such as COVID-19, a lesser-known face of nanomedicine is its potential to contribute to solutions to so-called rare or minority diseases. Coinciding with February 28th, the world day for rare diseases, experts invited by the Nanomed Spain platform and the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute (IRSJD) present the latest advances in nanomedicine against three of these disorders: muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis and Fabry disease.
Zaida Álvarez wins the Rafael Hervada prize
At the press conference held this morning at the San Rafael Hospital, the Rafael Hervada prize was announced. Zaida Álvarez, current researcher at IBEC, has been awarded for her pioneering research on regeneration of spinal cord injuries using nanotechnology at the Northwestern University, Chicago, USA.
IBEC leads the largest biotech consortium for healthcare in Spain
Yesterday, the strategic research programme in the area of biotechnology applied to healthcare was presented in Barcelona. The programme will be implemented through the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism Complementary Plans and will run until the end of 2024.
11F: IBECers celebrate and promote women in science
Last February 11, on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, IBEC researchers and staff gave talks in different schools around Catalonia. The objective of these meetings was to bring science closer to schools and to make more visible female scientific talent.
