SPECS Lab featured on TV and Radio for its work on COVID19 and mental health

Researchers from the SPECS lab at IBEC have  develop a new method to evaluate the mental health and wellbeing of people living under strict confinement measures such those during COVID-19 pandemic on April 2020. The study, conducted with people living in 17 countries, confirms that confinement measurements leads to a negative impact on the emotional wellbeing. The researchers also detected some personal situations that can entail a higher risk for the mental health and wellbeing.

Elisabeth Engel at Santander Pioneros: it’s time to support science

Three protagonists of the medical research field in Spain debated in a new edition of the “Pioneros Santander” forum, organized virtually by El País Retina. Elisabeth Engel, group leader of Biomaterials for regenerative therapies at IBEC, Rocío Arroyo, CEO of Amadix and Eduardo Jorgensen, of Medicsen, also CEO, agreed to celebrate the greatest interest in their work area, the intersection between science, technology and health, but at the same time they were cautious: there are no shortcuts in research, neither before Covid-19 nor after.

A “faster and safer” therapy against tuberculosis

A team of international scientists led by the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) has developed a “faster, more effective and safer” therapy to eliminate infections of intracellular bacteria that cause diseases such as tuberculosis. Scientists participating in the study include Group Leader Giuseppe Battaglia and the researcher Loris Rizzello of IBEC.

Josep Samitier talks about how the redistribution of funds will affect research

Josep Samitier, director of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia and president of the Catalan Association of Research Entities (ACER), assesses how science and technology can be affected by the fact that 53 million euros, that had to be invested in research, have been redirected to the healthcare sector, due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Magnet Alliance on the radio

Àngels Suarez, teacher at Gayarre school, explained the alliance between IBEC and the Gayarre School within the frame of the project “Magnet, alliances for educational success”. This initiative unites educational centres that have an unbalanced social composition with an institution of excellence for 4 years. This union will allow the educational centre to develop an innovative project that will become a reference project in its territory. During her intervention, she also shared with the audience a virtual experiment, easy to perform in our homes, to explain the density.

Núria Montserrat in a feature article at the ERC’s covid-19 section: Stopping coronavirus at the gate

ERC grantee Nuria Montserrat and her team create tiny kidneys which are proving to be key in the search for coronavirus drugs. The researcher is working with other international researchers and found that a trial drug could block early stages of COVID19. The ERC has created a section which is updated with the latest news about the ERC-funded research in coronavirus.
