Nanorobots to fight bacterial infections

Researchers develop self-contained micro- and nanorobots with antimicrobial activity, capable of attacking bacteria in the site of infection. The work has been led by Samuel Sánchez (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalunya (IBEC) and Cesar de la Fuente-Núñez (University of Pennsylvania, USA). The new technology, tested in mice, is a valuable tool for the treatment of bacterial infections in a controlled and localized way. In a future not so far, it could help combat infections.

Laboratory-generated mini-kidneys help understand the link between diabetes and COVID-19 disease

In an international collaboration, researchers led by Nuria Montserrat, ICREA Research Professor at IBEC, have generated human mini-kidneys that simulate the kidney of a person with diabetes in the early stages of the disease. These diabetic mini-kidneys open the door to studying, among others, the relationship between diabetes and COVID-19.

IBEC’s “Bioengineering at the Rural School” project makes the leap to Europe

The “Bioengineering at the Rural School” project, led by the Strategic Initiatives unit of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), is being projected to different European countries in an event organized by the European Network eTwinning, the European online platform for school education, where primary and secondary school teachers from all over Europe have connected to learn, first hand, about different strategies to follow to connect schools in rural environments with cutting-edge education in different fields.

Microfabspace & Microscopy Characterization Facilities, part of NANBIOSIS, renews as a Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructure

NANBIOSIS, the Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructures from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation that counts with the Microfabspace & Microscopy Characterization Facilities from IBEC, recently renewed its permanence in the Council for Scientific, Technological and Innovation Policy, the ICTS 2021-2024, in an event chaired by the Minister of Science and Innovation, Diana Morant.

Bioengineering in rural schools

The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is featured in the ARA newspaper for its innovative project that brings bioengineering to rural schools.

IBEC promotes scientific and innovation culture, and renews as a unit accredited by the ministry

The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is once again accredited as a member of the Network of Units of Scientific Culture and Innovation (UCC+i), through the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), under the Ministry of Science and Innovation. IBEC’s UCC+i promotes actions and programs for scientific communication, dissemination and education.
