IBEC receives funding from the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation’s Health Research 2025 Call to study new treatments for spinal cord injuries

Zaida Álvarez Pinto, a Principal Investigator at IBEC, will lead a biomedical research project that was selected in the 2025 edition of the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation’s Health Research Call for Proposals. The project, which will be carried out in consortium with IDIBELL, the University of Barcelona, the National Spinal Cord Injury Hospital Foundation and the Spinal Cord Injury Foundation, will focus on the development of a new platform for testing treatments for spinal cord injuries.

IBEC research takes third place in the 2025 Vanguardia de la Ciencia Awards

A study led by IBEC has won the 3rd Vanguardia de la Ciencia 2025 Prize. The research, led by Samuel Sánchez Ordoñez and with Meritxell Serra-Casablanca as lead author, proposes an innovative bladder cancer therapy based on nanorobots loaded with radiopharmaceuticals. These nanorobots are capable of moving around the bladder using urine as a source of energy.

IBEC secures funding for three research projects from La Marató de 3Cat

Two research groups from the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) have been selected to participate in three projects under La Marató de 3Cat’s 2024 call for proposals, which focuses on respiratory diseases. This funding will support research into diagnosis and clinical prediction, with the aim of improving respiratory health.

LUMIRIS, an IBEC spin-off, wins the Digital Entrepreneur Award in the Revelation category

The 7th edition of the Premis Emprenedors Digitals (Digital Entrepreneur Awards), organised by the Catalunya Ràdio programme, took place on Wednesday 18 June at the Antigua Fábrica Damm in Barcelona. The award recognises companies that have demonstrated exceptional growth and innovation in their field.

IBEC receives the Manel Xifra i Boada Award as a technological centre

The awards ceremony was held yesterday at the Caixabanc Auditorium in Girona. IBEC was awarded in the technology centre category in recognition of its twenty years of excellence and interdisciplinary research at the intersection of engineering and life sciences.

IBEC researcher Irene Marco-Rius receives Anatole Abragam Prize for her contributions to the field of magnetic resonance

Dr Irene Marco-Rius, principal investigator at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), has been awarded the 2025 Anatole Abragam Prize for her pioneering work on the use of magnetic resonance to study cells grown on chips, allowing ex vivo metabolic assessment of disease mechanisms and therapy responses in controlled microenvironments. The award was presented at the Joint ENC-ISMAR Conference in California.

IBEC principal investigator Santiago Marco has been named IEEE Fellow, the highest honour awarded by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The award highlights Marco’s contributions to signal processing and machine learning in chemical sensors.

IBEC spin-off Nanobots Therapeutics receives IMPACTO grant from the Spanish Association Against Cancer

IBEC spin-off Nanobots Therapeutics has been selected in the AECC’s 2024 call for IMPACTO grants. This is an initiative of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) aimed at technology-based micro-enterprises and SMEs to accelerate the arrival of new treatments in the clinic. The grants were awarded in Barcelona today.

INTROPY: A new approach to cancer therapy by inhibiting mechanotransduction

IBEC senior researcher Pere Roca-Cusachs has been awarded an ERC Proof of Concept Grant. This is a prestigious grant awarded by the European Research Council to explore the commercial and societal potential of research projects carried out at European institutions. Roca-Cusachs’ project, INTROPY, focuses on the inhibition of mechanotransduction as a potential therapy against cancer or fibrosis.

Eduard Torrents receives the ICREA Academia programme distinction

IBEC researcher Eduard Torrents has been awarded the ICREA Academia distinction by the Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA). The head of IBEC’s Bacterial Infections: Antimicrobial Therapies group received the award in the Life and Health Sciences category.
