IBEC senior researcher Pere Roca-Cusachs has been awarded an ERC Proof of Concept Grant. This is a prestigious grant awarded by the European Research Council to explore the commercial and societal potential of research projects carried out at European institutions. Roca-Cusachs’ project, INTROPY, focuses on the inhibition of mechanotransduction as a potential therapy against cancer or fibrosis.
IBEC researcher Eduard Torrents has been awarded the ICREA Academia distinction by the Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA). The head of IBEC’s Bacterial Infections: Antimicrobial Therapies group received the award in the Life and Health Sciences category.
IBEC’s Principal Investigator César Rodriguez-Emmenegger has been awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant. This prestigious European funding supports scientists in the consolidation phase of their research teams, allowing them to pursue innovative scientific ideas. The €2 million over five years will allow Rodriguez-Emmenegger and his team to develop Phagocytic Synthetic Cells (PSCs) to fight antibiotic-resistant pathogens.
IBEC researchers Benedetta Bolognesi, Xavier Fernàndez Busquets and Xavier Trepat have been selected in the CaixaResearch 2024 call to lead their own research projects. The grants will provide financial support for the scientists to carry out their research in key areas such as cancer, malaria and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
IBEC researcher Samuel Sánchez has received a Leonardo Grant from the BBVA Foundation. The funding will help him take his research a step further and use organic and biocompatible materials to develop his nanorobots, which will be used as drug carriers to treat bladder cancer.
The prize recognises the research work of Trepat, ICREA Research Professor at IBEC. These awards, presented by the Valencian Foundation Rei Jaume I Awards, aim to bring science and business closer together in order to promote research, scientific development and entrepreneurship in Spain.
The IBEC senior researchers were two of the winners of the fourth edition of the call for applications. Through this initiative, BIST recognises and supports scientist mothers working to reach a leading position and advance the research in their fields.
IBEC ICREA Professor Xavier Trepat has been awarded the Lilly Foundation Award in the category of preclinical research. With this accolade, the Fundación Lilly acknowledges Trepat’s work, distinguished by the application of techniques and concepts from physics to the health sciences.

This accreditation, granted by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, recognizes the relevance and impact of IBEC’s research results internationally and entails funding of 4.5 million euros over 4 years.
