School research projects on bioengineering developed at IBEC have great success

Last March Alex Pachón, a stutent that did his research project at IBEC won the CRACKS Prize awarded each year by the University of Girona (UdG) thanks to his School Research Project on nanobiotechnology applied to cancer medicine. Filotea Crasovan won the Foro de Gracia contest.

Alex’s work, entitled ‘The secret of oncological medicine hidden in the nanoworld’, is one of the 25 school research projects tutored last year by IBEC researchers.

An international committee has elected Samuel Sánchez, the European referent in nanomotors, as one of the new 13 researchers, among 185 candidates, who will be a member of the Young Academy of Spain.

New chemical lego blocks for health solutions

IBEC researchers develop new multi-responsive molecules able to self-assemble in water forming fiber-like structures. The so-called discotic molecules show responsiveness to temperature, light, pH, and ionic strength and they might show great potential for medical applications such as drug delivery systems, diagnosis or tissue engineering.

Edgar Fuentes is a PhD student in the Nanoscopy for Nanomedicine Group led by Lorenzo Albertazzi at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC). Within this group, Edgar and his colleagues focus on the synthesis of novel smart supramolecular materials for drug delivery.

IBEC leads three new European projects

Bioengineering is a core discipline for the medicine of the future, and Europe knows that. Proof of this is that the European Union (EU) has granted during the last months the coordination of three European projects to the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) to continue combining medicine, science and technology with the aim of improving people’s health.

The first one is the BRIGHTER project that is led by Professor Elena Martínez, the head of the ‘Biomimetic Systems for Cell Engineering’ group. The EU has contributed to this initiative that will be used by the consortium partners to develop an innovative high resolution 3D bioprinting technology able to fabricate 3D cell culture substrates which could be useful to produce artificial organs in the future.

IBEC’s sixth reSearch4Talent open doors edition goes online

Fifty undergraduate and master students attended this year’s reSearch4Talent, this is the sixth time we’ve opened our doors to young scholars interested in a scientific career, but this time, virtually.

In 2019 IBEC signed more than 145 internship agreements for Undergraduate and Master Students who are at a key moment in their careers with a wide range of national and international universities.

Cell culture lab technician at the Bioengineering in Reproductive Health Research Group

The Bioengineering in Reproductive Health Group offers a lab technician position for an experienced cell culture technician to develop a project in collaboration with the industry. The project involves testing the effects of different cell culture supplements on several cell types (e.g. Mesenchymal Stromal Cells, CAR T Cells, etc.)

Our laboratory is a multidisciplinary environment where biologists, biophysicists, clinicians and business developers synergize to create a unique environment shaped by science and entrepreneurship. Due to the high translational component of our research, we have established collaboration contracts with the pharma industry, hospitals and venture capital to bring our technology to the clinics and the market.

In our lab, we develop high-tech projects in the fields of embryology, cell biology and imaging. Our strategy involves the development of new products for the pharmaceutical industry. The current position seeks a motivated cell culture technician with experience in diverse cell culture systems.

Magnet Alliance on the radio

Àngels Suarez, teacher at Gayarre school, explained the alliance between IBEC and the Gayarre School within the frame of the project “Magnet, alliances for educational success”. This initiative unites educational centres that have an unbalanced social composition with an institution of excellence for 4 years. This union will allow the educational centre to develop an innovative project that will become a reference project in its territory. During her intervention, she also shared with the audience a virtual experiment, easy to perform in our homes, to explain the density.

IBEC receives a visit from the Mayor of Barcelona interested in our research against Covid19

The Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, visited IBEC facilities last Friday to learn, by our Director and a group of researchers, how bioengineering can help find solutions to health problems such as COVID19, cancer, or degenerative diseases.

When in early 2020, more than 200 scientists gathered in La Pedrera in Barcelona to discuss the present and future of bioengineering, no one imagined that the world would experience the first pandemic of the 21st century and that science would take on more importance than ever.

IBEC researchers find a new way to effectively transport drugs to the brain

An international group of researchers from the University of Maryland (United States) and the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) led by ICREA Research Professor Silvia Muro, has identified a new way of transporting drugs to the brain, one of the major challenges of the pharmaceutical science today, that could help to come up with new treatments for neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s.

To find this out, the experts linked an antibody capable of recognizing the ICAM-1 protein -a molecule expressed on the surface of blood vessels- to a series of polymeric nanoparticles that can transport drugs and inject them intravenously.

IBEC seeks a Head of Tech Transfer and Business Development. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing and executing an overall strategy to scout new discoveries and results in the institute, support IBEC’s scientists during technology valorization and intellectual property development, and commercialize those results to ensure beneficial impact on society.

The office will support the IBEC technology and business development capacity and will boost communication between IBEC community and external stakeholders in the innovation arena.

The Head of Tech Transfer and Business Development Office runs a team of 2 people and reports to the Managing Director and is part of the Institute’s senior management team.
